Playoff atmosphere expected for 'massive game' against Calgary Flames: Winnipeg Jets players

Head coach Rick Bowness is predicting an intensity similar to an NHL playoff-series clincher when his Winnipeg Jets host the Calgary Flames on Wednesday.

"[Wednesday] night is probably going to be like a Game 7 for both teams," Bowness said after the Jets practised Tuesday. "I think that's the importance of the game for both teams."

Bowness says it may not be an elimination game, but the Jets will treat it like one.

Now or never: Flames must bounce back vs. Jets after demoralizing loss to Blackhawks

Asked how his club could be swept by the NHL’s worst team with the season on the line, Mikael Backlund offered up a simple explanation.

“Maybe too many of us were thinking about tomorrow’s game, and thinking a little too far ahead,” said Backlund after a 4-3 loss to Chicago that certainly dampened anticipation over Wednesday’s eighth-place showdown in Winnipeg.

Oh sure, the chance to draw even with the Jets with a regulation win is still an enticing proposition for the Flames and their frustrated fans. They currently sit two points back of the Jets, who have a game in hand.

Flames Path To Playoffs Much Harder After Lackadaisical Loss to Blackhawks

It's not over yet, but the Calgary Flames went from potentially controlling their own playoff destiny to needing to run the table and getting some help.

That's what happens when top players don't play their best in the most meaningful game they've dressed for all season. Now that title belongs to Wednesday night's head-to-head battle against the Winnipeg Jets. That's essentially a win or get your garbage bag ready for next week scenario.

Going to the game tonight. Either the beginning of an epic push, or the last meaningful game of the season.

Knowing us, we will give it our best effort and smack the living daylight out of them. But still fall short of the postseason because of the massive hole we've dug all season long.

Hard to be optimistic about this game due to the unfortunate outcome last night. A lot has to go right from here on out. And the Jets are rolling.

Any chance Kadri sits tonight? I can’t handle watching him be a liability.

I fully expect them to win this game. It seems they are hell bent on missing the playoffs via tiebreaker as a fitting way to end one of the most frustrating seasons in franchise history.

Nm. Losing to the worst team to the league last night. Keep it up for the last few games and go golfing soon.

With the showing we received from half the roster last night, I'm done if the young guys dont get a shot tonight.

There's 4 guys sitting out that would give anything to play a game, maybe even 5 with stone.

There's a bunch of guys who are entitled to a roster spot based on previous accolades who have clearly shown they've quit on this team, coach and roster. Put the young guys in and let them either get you into the playoffs or die trying.

I don't need to see anything else from Lucic, Lewis, Kadri, Mang, Ritchie right now. Let's look to the future.

I think we will know in the first 10 if they've given up or not.

Unfortunately I think we get rolled tonight and lose by a few.

What a odd frustrating season.

Think last night was the final nail in the coffin. But I guess mathmatically its not over.

They are probably going to have to win out though and get some help from Nash, Colorado and Minnesota.

After last night I don't care if the Flames get pumped 8-1.

But you know they'll win in regulation just so they can choke it away against Vancouver.

I'd like to see Sutter put Ruzicka in for Kadri. Just to see it all go down if flames...

Well they couldn’t handle Chicago’s intensity, desperation and talent, so this should be like a spring lamb slaughter.

I think it will be typical Flames games like it's whole season.
They will get one or two lucky goals in the first then can't protect the lead. Goes OT and will loose as usual.
Tonight we will be 3 points back with a game short.
Anyway, I like Jets gets 8th as they have a more chance to beat Oilers than us.
