If anyone will touch Kadri I think you pull that trigger as soon as possible. Huberdeau I am more a fan of waiting on.

On TSN, LeBrun reporting that CBJ is willing to move LA's 2023 1st round pick. Hoping to get a top 4 D to replace Gavrikov by packaging the pick with other assets.

I wonder what they consider a top 4, considering what they must have thought of Gudbranson to pay him what they did.

LA’s pick will ultimately be ~25th. Considering the prices paid at the deadline I’d hope if they do deal Hanifin it would be higher than the 25th overall.

Maybe if Kylington is planning to come back next season, they would be willing to do that.

Trades at the draft usually don't yield the same as a deadline deal for expiring contracts. Sure more teams might be in play, but they likely eat the full cap hit and are less certain about how their season will go.

So they trade Gavrikov for a first rounder, and then use that first rounder to replace Gavrikov?
Hmm seems like there was an easier step here somewhere…

Exactly the pick I’ve played with on Capfriendly.
2023 1st round pick (LAK)
Denton Mateychuk
For Noah Hanifin.
…maybe somehow get the 2023 2nd round pick (CBJ) too.

Mateychuk is a damn good prospect. Probably has more value than that pick by himself

Mateychuk is a way more valuable piece than the 25th overall. He is going to be awesome and I don’t see Columbus trading him.

I mostly just want the Flames to believe in their prospects, hold onto picks and know when it’s time to sell off players. Calgary is not a top market in the league so you should be mostly building the team internally

It's a bit of a myth that this draft is that deep, as the depth is more at the top end. The 25th overall is never a "damn good" prospect. The 25th will have your a player who may or may not turn out to be an NHLer and is a long shot to be a first line/pairing skater.
https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article...023-nhl-draft/
In the late first your looking at pretty typical offerings. Expect a guy like Connor Zary, who could be a solid second liner or could be another Nemisz.
You get enough of those beans and you'll end to with solid depth in the organization. These are likely not franchise changers though.

Maybe adding Cole Sillinger to the pick makes it more palatable. He has had a tough year and fallen out of favor

25th OA and Sillinger or Cuelemans would be who I would be looking for. Mateychuk seems like a prospec they'd hold on to.

I hate the idea of losing Hanifin. Is he a trade chip because he won't sign again here or because we need to rebuild?
I think we regret that trade. Hanifin keeps getting better. He has been our best player the past couple games IMO. He is 26 so his next contract will cover his peak years. But his stats don't equate to an absurdly pricey deal. He is probably in the Mackenzie Weegar area of contract value (~$7m?).

That’s why they are called “prospects”, because there is a chance they will fail. As a guy who follows the draft very closely every year, I can say that this draft has very good depth going into the second round, with some very tantalizing young talent, who very well could be top-line talent. Of course, nothing is guaranteed. If it was, Kucherov would have been drafted 1st overall. And yes, you can get a “damn good prospect” in the late stages of the 1st, don’t be ridiculous. Where was Pastrnak taken?? 25th overall!!!

IMO no way they trade us sillinger, but that would be a total steal.
Sillinger +LA 1st. Delicious.
