I love being a cyclist, especially on my ebike. I don't follow any rules and it's super freeing.

Thing is, I dont have a problem if they'd pick a set of rules and stick with it.
But the crosswalks at that traffic circle (super stupid to begin with but thats another gear grinder) are designed for a pedestrian to gradually approach and allow traffic to stop and allow the pedestrian to cross.
But if you rush up to them on a bike at a high rate of speed, traffic cant just magically stop in time.
And you're not supposed to be riding through the crosswalk on a bike, its for pedestrians, bikes are vehicles, so having a cyclist approaching at a high rate of speed unexpectedly creates a hazard.

Cyclists, mad when you don’t treat them like a car, mad when you don’t treat them like a pedestrian.

Meh. It would have cost a million dollars anyway.

Is the view there different than it appears on street view now? The visibility of the pathways approaching the crosswalks all look pretty good.

The problem with bikes being vehicles is that they don't wait with traffic, they pass them, mostly on the right.
When a car is turning right and a bike is going straight, if the car is well ahead of the bike and already started their turn, the bike should be going around on the left side
of the car.
Even if the car is stopped to let pedestrians cross bike should not be going straight through to the right of the car.
And if the bike is turning right as well they're supposed to wait patiently behind the right turning car acting like any other vehicle on the road.

It's the inevitable problem when a bicycle is neither a car or a pedestrian, but needs to primarily operate on infrastructure designed for one or the other.

per the article:

The video shows that the bicyclist did not stop for the stop sign, but the crosswalk is marked and has flashing yield signs which turn on when pedestrians or bicyclists are present.
St. Petersburg Police say in this instance, the bicyclist had the right of way because the cyclists coming from the other direction had activated the flashing lights, which indicate that traffic must stop for those in the crosswalk. Police say the lights were still flashing when the bicyclist entered the crosswalk and when he was struck by the vehicle.

In the confusing mess, that biker is in line for a pretty significant personal injury case (especially in Florida)

I thought that had to be fake because it makes no sense.
Nope, just Florida: https://www.mysuncoast.com/2019/11/1...river-st-pete/

Well, that article sure was interesting.
Cyclist still failed to exercise due care for their own safety. Maybe hit the brakes?

I don't want to sound devoid of compassion for human life, but cyclists that decide to rip through intersections without stopping to make sure the traffic acknowledges them first deserve to get hit when it happens.
Relying on randoms behind the wheel to be observant and reactive is a grave mistake. They are not. It's just common sense.
Crosswalk lines don't have magical barrier powers that guarantee safety.
Also keep to the shoulder.. at all times.

You don't even have to stop, I don't agree with stop signs for cyclists because of how much time it takes them to get going again.
But at least yield and make sure it's safe, how often you see people just blindly sail through is insane

Lol, that particular incident is shockingly bad decision-making on the cyclist's part. Anyone else notice the one cyclist travelling the opposite way who turned around and watched the guy who ultimately got hit blow through the stop sign at a pretty good clip?

I'll take a reckless cyclist any day over 90% of the vehicles on the road. If you don't think that non-signalling, lane-wandering, inattentive #######s in two tons of metal aren't the worst thing on the road you must be one of them.

Wrong advice is wrong. Take the lane if you need it to be safe.
