My electricity has been continually locked in since 2007. Never felt a need to change it -- even when there was a provincial cap -- as the rates have always been very reasonable and you can cancel at any time so there is really no downside.

My only regret is not periodically renewing every year just to keep the price locked in for another five years -- not looking forward to December 2024 when my current rate of 6.59 cents expires...

The RRO is trending much lower this month. The pool price is averaging about 11˘ the last 30 days.

Once the Cascade plant comes online, I'd expect prices to come down, maybe not as much as when Shepard came online, but prices will come down.

The electricity rate cap ends April 1.

If you are on the Regulated Rate Option (RRO), and I really hope you aren't, you will see a line item on your bill soon that will be going towards paying down the $200M that was accumulated during the time the rate cap was in place.

This money will be paid back over the next 21 months.

If you are on the floating rate, you can lock your rate in with your electricity retailer.

Jesus this thread made me go check my Enmax bills and realized I've been getting hammered on electricity with the variable rate that's been in place forever. That's so embarrassing. Also on the floating gas.

So do I just call Enmax and lock in?

You can do it online as well, that's how I renewed my EasyMax and locked in.

Looks like I can chose between:

EasyMax Loyalty Electricity & Natural Gas
-$150 rebate
-$12.79/kWh 5-year fixed
-Floating gas

EasyMax Electricity & Natural Gas
-$12.99/kWh 5-year fixed
-Floating gas

I assume I want to switch to that Loyalty fixed?

…unless you are, for some reason, into paying more money and not getting a rebate?

I think they just show you both so you can see the loyalty rate is marginally better.

Wow I feel like such an idiot having not noticed this. Thanks guys.

Can you swing back to variable if prices come back down or are you actually locked in for 5 years?

You can change once a month, so you are locked in for 30 days now. After 5 years, if you haven't changed, you have to get a new deal, or go floating.

I'll post in here when I decide to go back to floating. I don't think that will be advantageous for several years yet.

I do float on gas.

Mine just came to an end as well, $0.06/kWH for the last five years or something like that. Sadtrombone.mp3

I just want to make sure that I'm not on RRO...so I would've had to apply for that or something, right? Like on my Enmax it doesn't say that I am, so I assume that I'm fine?

I just think that people on that option are going to get hammered with the pay back.

I was about to panic about our $0.068/kWH expiring soon but then I checked our bill and realized that a 100% increase to our rate only appears to add a 20% increase to our bill. Stupid fees.

Mine expires in 2 years. 0.0659 / kWh

Hopefully things will be better then...

Though I doubt it.

Me too! I wouldve sworn I was on a fixed rate 5 year plan, but it mustve expired some time ago.

We are using Epcor out here on the acreage. I can avoid any of the RRO re-payment risk by locking in to a fixed rate?

As an aside, Epcor's website is the slowest I have used in decades! Just awful.

Considering it is now almost 13c for a 5 year contract, my suspicions are no one sees it going anywhere near 6.6c again. You'd assume they would set the 5 year at a value that they come out ahead in 5 years, or at least break even. So 13c would be somewhat of a midpoint. I used to switch often, I don't see it making any sense to give up 6.9c before I have to, even if it dips below that for a bit.

I believe RRO is the default with Enmax, EasyMax is the option that lets you lock into rate terms. It should be pretty easy to tell by logging into your Enmax account on their site.

The Account Summary page should tell you what you have.

100%. Get off RRO if you can. The people that don't get off / can't get off are going to get hammered.
