Because it’s the same answer!! Neither are culturally significant!
Ovechkin scored 65 in the modern era. My life has not materially changed because of that accomplishment.

I would say that McDavid getting 70 will have the same level of cultural impact.

Whether the Oilers face the Kings or Seattle goes on a heater and they're bumped down to face Colorado, I feel pretty good about either match up.

Unlike last year, there are 4 or so teams in the conference that look like they won't be easy outs.

It's funny that since the Ekholm acquisition, the goaltending has progressively fallen off. I think the repercussions of riding the rookie are beginning to show. It's OK though, they've got Jack Campbell to fall back on.

How significant? IDK, I'm old, didn't Selanne scored 76 in his rookie season? That's the clutch and grab era, McDavid scores 60 in his 8th season where it's you touch him you're in the box era.

Yes. Was a STH in Wpg that year - absolutely magical

Scoring in general is also up by quite a bit, and goalie save percentages are down across the league.

This isn't as special as they're making it out to be, even if Connor is the best of the current crop.

If he's drafted in the 00s in the time of Robyn Regehrs he probably struggles to come near 40 goals at his peak

The last couple seasons are like the touch football version of ice hockey. Only 2 of 3 guys will even take the body on this guy in a given season.

It's almost a different game entirely, and one catered to entertainment over difficulty, which it used to be

Having a healthy Doughty makes LA a much tougher out than last year’s team, and the Kings have improved in other areas as well, namely they’re faster and more aggressive on their forecheck, at least from what I’ve seen.

I hope they meet the Kings in the first round, and Kings would still be pissed they lost to them last playoff, and want to extract pound of flesh, and sweep that pile of poo in 4 games!

Oh man, that would be like, the closest 4 game series ever! It could have gone either way.

I was there when he broke Bossys record. Scored I think 3 of the 4 goals in a 7-4 loss to Quebec. Was amazing. What luck as a kid to have that game for your hockey windup.

LoL I forgot all about that "closest sweep in history" garbage.

What a joke they are.

Scored 10 goals in 10 periods, culminating with the record.

I was there too, down in the corner where he shot his glove (instead of my own seats, for some reason)

Nothing like Winnipegers bonding over one of their franchise's two memorable moments on a Calgary Flames board, in the Edmonton is No Good thread

It's quite a feat to be that homeless and lost on the internet

More like the “I grab your stick while skating by and fall over and you get the penalty” era.

I have never like the Jets, not back then and not now. But I like Salanne, I think that's quite a feast that he scored 76 goals and broke that guy's record.

Upcoming Spec article:

Why doesn't the NHL force teams to allow McDavid to score 70-80 goals per year?
