His teammate Henry Thrun has signed with the Sharks.

Just heard the Sharks guys talking about that...and they're just saying he'll burn a year of his ELC up in the NHL this year.

If they can get him signed that fast, why can't Tre?

Is it a race? Who gives a ####, as long as he gets signed?

Coronato has had a great season.

Far from disappointing territory.

Some poorly informed wet blanket takes here

Hardly any difference in the quality of his linemates. If anything he played with better players in year 1 when he was with Farrell and Abruzzese (two college players who were good enough to make it as US Olympians). This year he's played with Farrell and a mix of Miller, Karpa and Tresca

The biggest difference between year 1 and 2 has been his own position, playing mostly RW last year, and mostly center this year. Playing center gave him more defensive responsibilities and likely took away offensive opportunities.

Thrun was a flight risk. He was drafted 4 years ago but has only played 3 years at Harvard, so he could use the same loophole that Schultz used to become a free agent on June 1. He had already informed Anaheim that was his plan, which is why they traded him to San Jose.

The Sharks gave up an asset to acquire his rights, which likely means they had already been in contact with his "advisor" to ensure he'd be willing to sign with them. The only leverage the Sharks had was the ability to burn off the first year of his contract.

Coronato doesn't have those same options. The Flames hold his rights for 2 more full seasons, so there's no real rush to get this done right away. It's common for players to take a couple days to sort things out after their seasons are over before signing.

At least Treliving doesn’t have to negotiate money and term.

They have those bonuses.

I remember the Leafs had a issue with someone because Lou the dinosaur didn't believe in giving one of the bonuses.

He can still play in the AHL next season if needed.

There is a 99% chance it's happening.
Does he want to be in the AHL though?

Another year of Harvard education, more time to work on strength and skills, and a year to see where the org is headed with maybe a new gm and/or coach.

I’d probably take the latter v an AHL spot.

I believe that there are standard bonus packages (A,B,C) but your point absolutely still applies.

If he hits the bonuses in his ELC you gladly pay them.

I’m wondering if there isn’t some “handshake” negotiations about role, playing time for the rest of this season, and opportunities for next season.

Either that or Conroy hasn’t finished talking to him since they arrived last night.

The CBA defines the categories for which a player can receive a bonus (like total number of goals, assists, and points), but the value of each bonus is still negotiable.

You offer him full value and hope he hits all those bonuses on a winning team.

Did Tkachuk hit his bonuses? Probably his last year when he got 77 points.

He’s 20 and never played pro. He’s good but not dominant. Another year of NCAA or AHL are probably his best path. I think he plays one more year.

If he signs one if Pelletier or Duehr has to go down I think?
There is no roster size limit after the TDL so no one would have to go down unless his salary puts them over the salary cap.

On HNIC:

Friedman says full court press to sign Coronato.
Flames have made it clear they are ready for him to come join them.
Player still has to make decision.

Also a bit worried.

More so just me being sketchy with the college prospects always, but hopefully it’s nothing.

Just feel like if it was a priority for him wanting to get up with the club ASAP he would have done so around the same time his teammate did.

Please Matt, give us something positive to end the season!
