Doesnt Bieksa live in Anaheim though? And coach either his sons or just a club team? Hes always talking about stuff he teaches them during HNIC
Would be adding a ton of travel to his life, and it's not like he needs the money, plus he seems to have the Saturday night/playoff lead role as long as he wants it. If hockey goes back to tsn when sportsnet deal is up, I'm sure espn or tnt would give him any role he wants
I'd be shocked if its him

TIL that Vancouver uses "Don’t you (forget about me)” by Simple Minds as its goal song.
Really Vancouver? That's the best you can do?

Great song and especially amazing band Simple Minds shouldn’t be tarnished like that.

John Garrett is a legend. I love his style...even when he had to do Calgary games a few years ago and struggled to say anything nice. He's a good curmudgeon as opposed to a bad curmudgeon like Ray Ferraro.

Garrett is incredibly well spoken, but unapologetically a Canucks fan. He still never shied away from criticizing the team. Last season Shorthouse and himself were the voice of all Canucks fans while commentating games. I remember the last few games before the coaching/gm change where they were just openly frustrated with the team on the ice, getting audibly upset as the team continued to make mistake after mistake while Green just chewed his gum.
In the end the part that was most enjoyable about Cheech was his relationship with his co-workers in Shorthouse and Murphy. It made the game calls better as they weaved in jokes, stories from the road and their love of food all while it being obvious how much they enjoyed working together. Even if someone as beloved by Canucks fans as Bieksa takes over, it's not going to be the same and will probably get pushback from the fans at some point. I think back to last year when Corey Hirsch filled in for a few games and because Shorty wasn't his normal joking self, everyone assumed he hated Hirsch when the reality was we had just become so used to their brand of PBP and colour, we forgot what it actually sounds like normally.
Vancouver has usually been blessed by amazing pbp guys, but Garrett was the first (and possibly only) time we've had a colour guy on the same level.

Ya Cheech is a legend. Him and Shorty are great at what they do. Nice to see a guy ride off into the sunset on his own terms.

I think Kelly Hrudey would be an excellent choice as his replacement.

Thing is Garrett could be a total homer but it was this sort of "aw shucks", inoffensive, almost charming homerism, like an affable grandpa who you just sort of roll your eyes at.

Ray Ferraro used to ruin the World Juniors for me every year.

Yep, he can pump the tires of the Canucks opponents goalie every game. And the refs tires for calls against the Canucks.

And Mavi and oilers (as usual). No change required.

There is absolutely room for curmudgeons in sports broadcasting IMO.
No one needs a perpetually optimistic fanboy calling games or doing color. It's so annoying (looking at your Wills).

Shorthouse and Ball are two of the best in the business. They should do every national game they can. It's comical Sportsnet can't see this.
