What I didn’t like about the WBC was the sheer amount of people who declined before the tournament started. You didn’t have the best of the best for each nation out there. But the last few games were really dramatic and full of emotion which made it a win. Would be really nice is Manfred wasn’t the face of providing the trophy as well.
They then delayed that to Feb of 25, but that is in doubt as well because of the still existing geo-political situation we find ourselves in. The decision to go forward with it or not will have to be made by the end of this summer to accommodate the logistics of it all.
And no...you cannot have a best on best tourney in hockey without Russia and be able to call it that.

Rugby and cricket had multiple best-on-best tournaments without letting South Africa in, you can call it whatever you want. It's not like it's a two-country sport. Russia hasn't won a best-on-best medal since 2002.

Yeah...well it is right in the middle of the NHL season.
And why shouldn't the NHL be in control? The vast majority of those playing in it are under contract to them.
It all comes down to $$. The NHL runs it, the players make money as it constitutes HRR. The IIHF runs it, no money for the NHL players nor the owners, yet they are the ones taking the financial hit by shutting down the season...plus the ever looming injury to star players concern.
Im still not sure why they wont hold it in September myself. NHL training camps can still proceed while the WC is ongoing, they will just be without their star players for a couple weeks, but when they do re-join their clubs, would be in midseason form. They keep their schedule in tact, and have a buzz going into the start of the year.

The world championships happen at the end of the season, not the middle. The only players who are unavailable are playing in the conference finals and finals.
As to why "shouldn't" the NHL run it? FIBA runs the basketball international events, FIFA runs football international events, World Rugby runs international rugby events, ICC runs the international cricket events, etc, etc, etc.
Maybe the reason we've had like 4 meaningful international hockey tournaments in the past 30 years is because the NHL is too ####ing incompetent to figure it out, and this is one of those rare times we should just leave it to the IIHF to organize and host a right proper World Cup like every other normal ass sport.
If MLB played ball () with WBSC, we might have a meaningful international baseball tournament quadrennially. But they are like the NHL and can't get out of their own way.
