Sutter has been trying the "Get them all to hate me so they rally around that as a team together" card all season and it hasnt worked.
TBH the issue here is likely that at some point around game 45 the team actually needed a softer touch.
Buy in has not been the issue all season. They were buying into what Sutter was teaching. Lack of finish, poor goaltending, poorly timed gaffes, and some bad luck were what was killing them.
But I dont think Sutter ever softened his approach, and just pushed harder, and IMO thats probably where he lost them.
If you have a team that is doing what you ask them to do, and are working hard, but just arent getting results, but then you just dont let up and keep hammering them...that is when you are sure to lose them.
