If McDavid weren't around, I think it would be down to Tkachuk and Pasta, as long as the Panthers make the playoffs. As is, McDavid is going to win it in a landslide.

This trade will go down as the biggest fleecing in Flames franchise history - worse than Gilmour for Leeman.
I mean what did you expect? It was about the best return you could have asked for given the situation. If they decided to trade him randomly then sure I could buy it. I hindsight I could get preferring Necas as a base.

ok? Fans aren't being paid to run a hockey team.

Even Steinberg was on Flames Talk last week (where he is typically quite positive about the team) saying that he didn't like how the Flames handled this situation.

He essentially said that the Flames try to handle each player/prospect the same way and let them sink or float based on that. He mentioned that Valimaki needed a more delicate touch. The Flames weren't able to adapt, and it cost them a very valuable asset.

Why would anyone applaud a decision to put a player on waivers?

I remember thinking he would go unclaimed, but that's not the same as being happy about potentially losing a player for nothing.

IMO it's not wrong for the Flames to look at how they handled him and try to improve.

The waiver wire has been a net negative for this club I guess.

exposing Byron over Ortio.
exposing Valimaki over Mackey

The adds I can remember are Schlemko and Bartkowski which were actually useful at the time.

I still don’t place him as a very valuable asset yet. Will see how next season goes

A change of scenery was the best thing for Valimaki. It’s obvious it wasn’t gonna work for him in Calgary. But I’m not gonna lie, seeing him succeed does make me question the Flames development staff and if there were any missteps by them at a certain point

I think the biggest misstep is not keeping Valimaki and placing Kylington LTIR or something. I just really don’t think they thought he would get claimed. If you believe Tre the coyotes were the only claim. I think biggest waiver miss was Tolvanen for the Flames

Weegar has had a solid year, you haven't really seen Schwindt, and there is still the draft pick. I don't understand how you can call it a fleecing.
A 25 year old perenial 100pt play-driving/finishing power forward @ 9.5Mx8yrs for a 29 year old playmaker that doesn't drive or finish plays @ 10.5Mx7yrs, a 29 year old 2-4 defenceman @ 6.25Mx7yrs, an AHL player and a 15th overall pick.

I admit to 100% thinking we pulled off the steal of the century when it happened (and I was one of the few who said Tkachuk was going to be good)... but I'm firmly in the camp of thinking we got hosed big time now.

Edit: I guess the trade itself was still pretty good. It was really us that hosed ourselves by signing both of them to max term before seeing them in action under Sutter.

I mean hosed is pretty harsh. The 25 year old wasn't going to sign with the team and he gave a limited list of teams he would sign with. So, they either do a one year deal with him and he walks to free agency or play ball and negotiate with the 5 (?) teams he was willing to sign with. That it is even debatable whether the Flames lost the trade means that the trade is a win.

Further, judging a trade with the benefit of hindsight is always a little unfair because there is more data available that wasn't present at the time management was making the decisions.

I don't get the got hosed.

Florida's didn't go into the offseason planning on unloading guys they already started to work on a potential extension for Huberdeau before Tkachuk blindsided Treliving.

I guess these guys are all retiring at the end of the season and nothing will change in the next 7 years.

Oh god, Flames didn't trade nine years of Tkachuk he demanded a trade to one of a handful of teams. Flames traded one year of Tkachuk as he was a pending ufa

Tkachuk hosed the Flames

Also, Huberdeau is having a rough year in a far more defense system than Florida. He had more points with the Panthers last season than Tkachuk will though.

Pittsburgh down 1-0 in their game so far, and the Panthers leading 3-1 in theirs. Tkachuk with a goal and assist so far. Bennett combined with Tkachuk on both plays too.

If the two scores hold it'll move the Panthers ahead of the Pens for that last wildcard spot.

I'm sure he is fine considering he had more points and the team did far better last season
