Toffoli’s goal last night was a beauty play all around and his pass to Kadri for the last goal was a nice play. He is going to be a solid 1st or 2nd line RW for this team this year.
I'm not sure if Mangiapane will fit better up there either. Both he and Toff are snipers and what we lost in Gaudreau is someone who can drive the play of the top line by carrying the puck in.

It might be Kadri who might be the better fit on the top line (even though it breaks our great 2nd line) since he's the only strong puck carrier I see from the play this year.

I think that when the dust settles and things have been sorted out that we will end up seeing:

Huberdeau - Kadri - Toffoli
Dube - Lindholm - Mangiapane

Toffoli is really good at managing the puck, and getting into scoring position. Mangiapane is a much better forchecker and more hungry around the net.

I honestly think just a swap of Mangiapane and Toffoli would work well.

Hes not even playing that bad, on pace for 35G 23A 58P.

The line just seems a bit 'off' 5v5.

First the Flames are 5-2 against a 6 playoff teams and high flying Buffalo

.714 winning pct Last year they had a .677 winning pct over 82 games.

If you are valuing fancy stats the Flames are getting better results with poorer xGF% and CF%

Do the Flames fancy stats need to improve to maintain an outstanding winning % ? Or does the balance in lines count for more wins? Flames are really rolling 4 lines 5on 5 .

Or does fancy stats have a limited correlation to winning %?

As a team this year they are xGF 52.2% and CF% 54.37%

Last year they were xGF 54.98% and CF% 55.58%

Last year the Flames fancy stats were driven by their top 2 lines

Bump.

Toffoli having a hell of a year. This season has had some major downs, but this player right here has been a huge positive. Guess top 6 right handed RW bode well here in Calgary.

You were right, Steve!

I remember what Toffoli said before the trade last year, when the Canadiens were primed for a rebuild: "I want to be part of the solution... I want to be a guy who's a leader, who's looked up to"

If Toffoli wants to stay here past his current contract and be "the guy", he would be a great mentor for Coronato

I hope that the Flames sell high (for once) with Toffoli this summer.
We could potentially get back a 1st for a cost controlled 30 goal scorer. He is 1 year from UFA and the Flames cannot likely afford to re-sign him.

With Coronato & Zary coming onto the team next year, we will need to subtract from our current core.

I don't agree with selling Tofolli unless they rebuild, which I don't expect will happen. How long have we been looking for a right handed sniper?

Yeah, shipping out your top scorer because you’re counting on players who haven’t played in the NHL to make up the difference seems… poorly thought out.

I wasn't too keen about the high price we paid for a guy that didn't seem fast and consistently productive (at the time), but I didn't realize how much of a power player he is. What a season he's having and we have him for another year yet which is amazing. Guy has been our best forward all year.

It’s such a tough one. He obviously has no issue playing under sutter either.

Arguably he, backlund and lindholm will never have higher value (backlund’s was probably at the trade deadline). Probably Tanev too. But right now they are also the core and makeup of this team under sutter..

Historically Calgary has been horrendous with asset management, knowing when to sell high and make hard decisions. They haven’t been good at making choices that are best for the long term of the club. That’s the problem with also being in 7-10th and win now mode.

It’s hard to look at Nashville and not envy their position. They are as much in the playoff hunt as Calgary but holding a wealth of picks for the future…

Personally I would have sold at the deadline. Doing what’s best for the future and not trying to squeeze in as 8th seed. If we end up on the outside looking in, I think they have to be sellers at the draft and re-tool.

For a guy like Taffoli I think you can trade him at the deadline with retention for as much or maybe more than you can in the summer without it. So I would not be rushing out to trade him now because he has sell high value.

Often at the draft you see trades and think that's all it took to get that guy....at the deadline it can be they got that for that guy. Not always the case like Hamonic or Camalleri where the team doesn't sell a guy they should.

I wasn't too happy with the trade based on the Toffoli the team got to end last season but IMO he's been the Flames best overall player this season and part of me would like to see him re-signed if he would take a shorter term deal as with his footspeed he doesn't have another step to lose as it could drastically alter his effectiveness. That said the team really does need to get younger and signing another 30 year old into his mid-30's is probably the wrong move for this team in the big picture.

Not that I disagree with you but considering the contracts of Huberdeau and Kadri we won't be in a position to have a guy like Toffoli be that overpaid but helpful vet mentor, especially if you see Backlund in a similar role.

Toffoli is also going to be a valuable trade chip

I think Tyler Toffoli is a great player, but I shudder at the thought of paying him more than his current $4.25million after his contract expires in 2024 at age 32.

Sell high and get what you can.

We've hitched our horses for these 3 seasons to our highest-paid underperforming forwards in Huberdeau ($10.5M), Kadri ($7M) and Mangiapane ($5.8M).

We don't need to put another anchor contract around our necks. It those 3 rebound next year, as I expect them to, it will easily make up for the loss of Toffoli in a trade.
