The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is another amazing musical, this one from France in the 60s. It's absolutely breathtaking to look at, everything has this candy colored gloss over it almost as if you were in Willy Wonka's factory. The story is pretty basic with a young couple that falls in love, until the man is drafted into the army and has to serve for 2 years. But the scenery, and actors elevate this into legendary status. Current director Damien Chazelle said this is his favorite musical, and you can certainly see it influence his work particularly La La Land.
Tom Sizemore had a brain aneurysm, doesnt sound like there is any chance.
Loved him , great actor.
When I think of Tom Sizemore I always think of Strange Days (one of the most underrated movies of that era IMO). He was fantastic in that movie as the psychopath private investigator.

Did anyone here used to collect laserdiscs back in the day? I picked up my first Laserdisc today (Terminator 2), they seem so much cooler than VHS (although I still love VHS) and look fantastic as a display piece, like a cross between a record and a DVD. I think they also had better quality picture and sound , and included special features, but were super expensive compared to VHS. It's a shame they never really took off in North America.

They did. Later, when they could made smaller and cheaper. DVDs.

We couldn't afford it back then, I was just happy my dad bought a Beta quite early on. There were some real Laserdisc limitations and technical issues that didn't help the format catch on. Just listened to this episode, great stuff:

Its crazy how advanced DVDs were when they came out. Plus almost 30 years since there release they are still the #1 selling physical media for movies in North America.
I was gonna correct you but yeah I guess it is getting on for 30 years. Jesus. Though I didn't get a player until 1999/2000 and I remember being an early adopter among people I knew. It was a gamechanger compared to VHS, the main advantage being far easier to fast forward/rewind using the actual buttons or the chapter skip function. Other cool things were menus (and hidden easter eggs), making of docs, commentaries etc. Although as a teenager one of my favourite functions was the ability to pause and zoom in on Nicole Kidman in Eyes Wide Shut

Not only that, but the picture quality on DVD was vastly better than VHS. TVs were getting bigger faster in the early 2000s, so audiences could notice the difference. It's hard to see much difference between any picture in a 20inch TV. The one disadvantage it had was you couldn't record TV with a DVD player like you could with VHS.

100%.
What a criminally under-rated movie and well ahead of its time.

I remember my dad renting Laserdiscs and a Laserdisc player from the Beddington Rogers video!
