If they win that lottery...for all the Canucks' management disfunction, a core Hughes, Bedard, Pettersson, and Demko would definitely be a good foundation to add wingers and depth around.

Hey, a 10 spot jump in lottery is a W as well. Finish 13th and pick 3rd? Yeah that'll do. Bedard is the Uber tier but there's also 5 players that are absolutely top tier blue chip prospects after him.

This could be the boldest hold in franchise history. I wouldn't call it Indecisiveness.

And this makes sense.
There is nobody they could be selling that they should be taking below market value on or selling for the sake of selling.
It doesn't make sense to trade Tyler Toffoli with retention if the offer from Carolina is just a 2023 1st. That first is 25-32...that wouldn't be worth it, especially if you're eating 25-50% of his salary next year too.
It only makes sense if a team actually is going to overpay.

The top 6 pick, worse case scenario is top 8 pick alone is a big difference. Vancouver could overall now and future rank ahead of us.

I guess we'll never know if they were offered below market value or not because that's subjective. What we do know is other players were sold this deadline for pretty good returns which is why it's frustrating.

Canucks are close to adding one of those top 5 without winning the lottery though.

I might put Lewis in that category, but he's not going to return something significant. Still if you can get a 4th or 5th, worth doing. I'd have to think someone would value him as a depth guy that might be inserted in later rounds as attrition takes a toll.

They haven't done serious damage all season and are on a scorching 3-4-3 pace during their last 10 with a 4 game losing streak but you better watch out, these Calgary Flames mean business!

To be fair, Bissonette, Anson Carter, and Kevin Bieksa all said the same thing.

Over the last decade the Canucks have 6 top 10 picks, 2 of them top 5, and where are they?
Hell, 3 of those picks they’ve managed to turn into a whole lot of nothing.
Vancouver is not ranking ahead of anybody.

If the value isn't there you don't just trade for the sake of trading, I get and can appreciate that. Hopefully they are countering any offers with aggressive acceptable value though to see if others will move and not just sitting there saying "not good enough" and remaining silent.
I'm okay with no moves if the value isn't there. Still stings that this process didn't start at least 10 days ago, doesn't sound / look like it did, and it was obvious this team was where we would be back then. Heck, back in December it was obvious, so disappointing they take forever to get to the obvious.
If there's one thing this management team needs to do, it's get with the program and have some courage to use their instincts and insight to make some moves before time runs out and value severely erodes. Now the Flames are going to look to do similar moves at the draft and the picks will be valued way higher and you're just not going to get the same value.

Were they? Who received a big overpayment except for Jeannot (and maybe Ekholm).
Meier....fair but not overwhelming.
Chychrun...fair maybe even a little underwhelming.
Ekholm...1st, Barrie, 2022 1st. Maybe a slight overpay.
Neidereiter...2nd Fair but I don't love the return.
Tarasenko....1st...that's Fair but not amazing.
Orlov/Hathaway...1st, 2nd...maybe a slight overpay
O'Reilly/Accari...1st, 2nd ... maybe a slight overpay
I think the volume of trades got people excited but really there actually wasn't a ton that was an overpay except for that ridiculous Jeannot trade. Also think people were just surprised 2023 1st round picks moved - but I also don't recall a year where 10 teams in one conference all decided they were buyers.
Jeannot remains the only return where I go....holy crap what were they thinking.

This is true, but the only thing I do fear, is that there is a bit of a GM old boys club with some horribad GM's in it, one of which may end up here.
