The point is every year young players you would think would not be available become available. He's a star young player that did not have a NTC. The point is late 1sts aren't stars but packaged together often could get you one in a trade.

It's unlikely this team makes the playoffs but, if they do, they'll be on an epic heater. So there's that.

It’ll look even uglier if he decides to leave. Sitting on your hands as you burn the last year of your contract before you manage another team would be an ugly, ugly look. Hope it doesn’t turn out that way.

Are his hands tied somewhat because he doesn't have a deal beyond this year, though?

Tkachuk has as good as an NTC. He had a guaranteed $9M QO and a year to UFA status.

Hopefully one or both of them gets really desperate as the clock ticks down and matches whatever price we have set.

is it possible he and the team know he is moving on, and so this is kind of expected?

Yeah, I guess that could be the other side of it. Don’t do anything long term or tear anything down because we want to give the next guy an NHL roster to work with.
If you basically knew you were out of a job though, and ownership knew, I don’t know why they’d wait and burn a whole year instead of just making the change.

They’d just let him go then. Murray Edwards and Co don’t operate like this…

With one year left on his deal and would only extend with like 5 teams
not a good example at all. Also the Flames could have traded Tkachuk for Eichel but he wouldn't sign there either. Flames had the assets for Chychrun, if they wanted to give up a 2023 first...likely wouldn't have gone over well.

Late 1st can be stars too.
The funniest thing is, as much as I am unimpressed by most aspects of Flames management, I would wager we've got top five or so amateur scouting, at least in North America.
They just operate on a handicap of not playing enough young players, not having draft picks, and not having open, obvious roster spots that would entice key college prospects playing in New England Ivy League schools to sign with the expectation of a legitimate opportunity.

I expect something along the lines of sending Zadorov to a contender for a 3rd.
And being the 3rd team in a trade, take on some retention salary for a 4th.
Which I guess would both be wins in the long run.

If I could make an online bet on Flames acquiring Joel Edmundson, I’d make it. Feels like they the kind of deal we make given OK’s potential absence next year it seems plausible for what this management team might chase. Without saying whether I think it’s a good idea, Joel and his $3.5MM cap hit traded for the 2025 Fifth rounder is my prediction.
