They have won three in a row twice this season and one of them was opening the season games 1-3. That is pretty crazy for a team that's been in the playoff hunt most of the season.

Hahaha you need to step away and relax a little. It's just a game. No Flames fan is high fiving each other this year and celebrating how the season has gone.
But back on trade rumors, Canucks radio is talking about how well Demko has been in his 2 games played since his return and wondering if something happens there... I still think Toronto needs a better goalie.

Goaltending and Huberdeau being terrible is an easy excuse to point towards doing nothing.

2022/2023 Trade Speculation and Rumours

Until Edwards finally gives up on the philosophy of just making the playoffs and hope for the best, this franchise is going nowhere.
The goal is to win the cup, not just do enough to get eliminated in the first round, and maybe win a round once a decade.
|
Is the goal to win a cup, or to maximize revenue each year?
I strongly believe it is the latter, not the former. Making the playoffs every year, keeps interest in the team high (and thus ticket sales). Rebuilding properly (2-4 years process) will empty out the building

That’s just it. No mega losing streaks or win streaks. A frustrating season of mediocrity where the Flames showed flashes of getting on a roll

Look at Edmonton, was the building empty during their 10 year rebuild?
If the Flames rebuild they could spend $5M or so a year under the cap while rebuilding and the building will not be empty.
Making the playoffs is big money but there aren't exactly making it every year with teh current model and they never get 2 to 4 rounds of revenue.

You know what's big money and creates life time fans? Long successful playoff runs.

I know a lot of people are talking about the Flames having one good season, one bad, one good one bad...
But I don't like the odds of this team competing next season short of a couple of Pelletier/Zary/Coronato absolutely popping off. Otherwise, this team will simply be older, more expensive, and likely just as inept in terms of skill.
I think we can expect goaltending to return to the mean a bit, and I suppose if the goal is 'make the playoffs and anything can happen', something can happen - but the organization is so far back in terms of skill, I don't think that's something you can fix in one or even two off-seasons.

The Flames will still make money even if they suck. They're the biggest sport ticket in Calgary. Yeah revenue will take it hit, but in the long-run it'll likely be worth it

The team is cursed this year so it is time to embrace this will be a bad year and sell off some assets and try and pick as high as possible. If done right we could be looking back at 2023 as a criticality important year in franchise history.
Playoffs require an improbable run but picking top 10 looks possible and I think adding a potential future cornerstone is appealing. If there is a down year to have this could be it.
This team is over the cap or close to it next year so likely need to shed salary. Why not do that now so you can get the assets in hand and potentially increase the chances of getting into the Bedard lottery? I am ready to punt on this season even though I do feel if this team started to get their mojo together could be a threat.

I think you have to take a Dallas Start kind of approach and run with the immovable contracts while hoping for an infusion of young talent. A few years ago they looked like they were heading in the direction of the Sharks but they really hit on some draft picks netting a franchise winger, defenseman, and goaltender. Maybe Wolf and Coronato can be those guys for the Flames. Really that's all we can hope for at this stage. Would be nice to maybe have some lottery ball fortune and find a really good player in the top 10 of this upcoming draft. That would be a great start.

Anyone else getting a playback error on the trade deadline show on Sportsnet Now? I’ve tried a number of devices, no luck.
Pretty funny.

I think Edmonton is not empty because there is nothing else to do in that dump of a city. Flames fans might prefer a weekend in the mountains to spending money to watch the Flames lose.
When I was a season ticket holder it was hard to offload tickets during our 2 50 win seasons and in the playoffs last year. I am not as convinced as you are the fans will come if the team tanks.

Yep. Same deal. I did get it to work on Apple TV but took a few tries of closing the app and restarting it
