I was thinking the same thing. "The House That Connor Built, Calgary Edition".
Pittsburgh got Crosby not long after the city final got it together to make a new building. They just needed a new star player to ensure that butts would be in the seats.
I am only half serious.

Funding was secured and the arena built years AFTER Crosby was drafted by the Penguins. I always thought that lottery was fixed as well.
GM and CO fielded a TON of calls today. Nothing too close to hold players out.
Flames received initial offers on a few players after letting the league know its intentions be known but this isn't an estate sale.
Teams mostly engaged with the Flames are Carolina(no ####), Colorado, Winnipeg, Buffalo and Ottawa.
I don't think the asking price for Lindholm will be met by 3PM EST but deadlines breed desperation.
Players with the most interest seem to be Backlund, Toffoli and Dube...Lewis will probably go tomorrow.
Flames D are of interest around the league to teams both in and out of the hunt but the same snag for the flames continues to hold them hostage.. Oliver Kylington.
Surprise name of day was Mangiapane - Having an average season but this could be the case of buying the potential..5.8M Cap hit for 2 more years is a sticking point...doesn't seem to have fire in his heart.
Challenge is Flames are not interested in complete future trades but teams don't want to subtract from their rosters in the hunt. Most teams that wanted to move 2023 1st rounders have done so.

Sell Toffoli for 1st. And sell some spare parts, maybe, like Lucic, Lewis? Others can be traded next season as we all know they will have the best season as contract years.

I'm sorry but if this is true, this team is so ####ing dumb. Truly unbelievable. We're never getting out of the woods.
Who cares if you are able to make a hockey trade for roster players, or entirely for futures? This season is lost. The lower you finish the better.
But beyond that, as much as I would want the Flames to simply use draft picks in the draft, draft picks are also a medium of exchange. Just trade them for whatever 29 year old mistake you want to make next before signing him for 7 years at a cap hit that far exceeds any value he'll ever provide to the team.

Man, just grab some tiered prospects. It's not like we couldnt use developing talent in all areas of a development arc.
Sure it'd be nice to have another 1st in this draft but adding a Brad Lambert or Noel Gunler or a top shelf D prospect or two wouldn't hurt either. Gotta keep the graduation cycle going somehow.
