I’m not one of those that sees running it back with the same group as a winning strategy. Too many players in contract years at that point.
If the season is a failure, sure it’s an easy decision to sell expiring contracts.
But assuming you’re not expecting to fail, you have an issue as you can’t re-sign all of those guys and you’re going to be left in a predicament.
Seems like we’re at a good point to decide who you actually want to build around. One of the challenges the Flames currently face is that their longest term contracts remaining were signed before any of those players played a single game for the franchise. Rasmus the one exception. Are those actually the players to build around? If so, start building the pieces around them.

What do we do next year, if we are in contention at the deadline and have 6 pending UFA?
Granted, you’d hope we would have signed some of them by then. But after what we just saw this past off season I’d be a little gun shy to see that.
You know if we are in contention next year, we aren’t trading any of the UFA’s.
Sure would be a shame to lose those guys for nothing but potentially a playoff round or two

It’s never bad. But, what do we do with 6 UFA’s if we are in contention? I think that’s a really tough situation to try to weigh current playoff potential against a possible large chunk of future assets

It's about being competitive for longer then 1 season. If a team doesn't want to rebuild then they need smart asset management to stay competitive consistently.

There will be teams who underachieve in playoffs or do ok and want to add more - all looking for those pieces in the offseason.

The prices for some players seem high now. If the trades were underwhelming returns for selling team, then sure wait. But they have been very good returns. We need to get in on this action, and who knows we still could slip into a top 10 pick.
