I could be off on some of the details, but I think basically someone said they heard a rumour at an Orange Julius stand and it became a meme on here.

This is the earliest reference I could find https://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=63917, so it predates 2008

Nah. I actually like Huby and think he’ll bounce back next year. Him and Pelts seem to be forming a good bond and chemistry together

I want to trade Toffoli but if he doesn't get you a guaranteed 1st at least, don't trade him.

Flames have had enough time to figure out what they want to do. To hear they still don’t know what they want this close to the deadline is a little disappointing.

What if a guy like Toffoli is stuck on 10 goals next year by the deadline. Some of these players are getting older - time to capitalize while they are having some of their best seasons.
|
I don't disagree.
If it's me I'm shopping these guys with 50% retained and shopping them aggressively.
BUT you would still have the draft to move these players, and potentially more suitors at that time (especially since a lot of the East has made their moves already).
So in the end it really all comes down to the offers you get and if you feel that it's such good value that you can't say no.
I also don't think anybody saw the market being as ridiculous as it's been so far this year - the questions earlier this year were if any team would move a 2023 1st since that draft looked so deep. So I don't think anybody saw this crazy sellers market happening, and I think the Flames maybe missed the boat on that a bit too.

worst case the Flames miss the playoffs and have a pretty good 2023 pick...better than the 8 teams out in round one (many of them won't have a pick at all) and the Flames will still have Hanifin, Lindholm, ect. in the summer if they want to make moves
|
Sure but it seems like you might be able to get more for these guys now than in the summer. If you’re not getting great offers in what seems like an over heated market, you might not get more in the summer.
Seems to if you want to make a “hockey trade” the best plan is to do it in two parts. Draft capital is cheap to acquire at the deadline and is worth more at the draft.

Carolina still has not made that one move and may feel panicked a bit seeing what other teams are doing.
They might be ripe for the picking but who knows.
They need a shutdown guy and have had a lot of regular season success with little to show for in the playoffs. Now is the time for them to go for it.
Backlund or Lindholm with Toffoli for Necas with picks and prospects attached would be the right thing for them to do.

It shouldn’t be. It tells me they aren’t buying in a major way, but everything else (standing pat, retooling, selling) doesn’t require any action today or tomorrow. This deadline is meaningless to the Flames.

If they had some sort of plan earlier, maybe they could have acquired some of those 1st rounders that teams are giving away like candy.

Necas leads their team in scoring - that's not happening.
Jarvis...maybe but that seems like a pipe dream too.
Teams rarely trade young guys already contributing when trying to improve their team.

God damn do I ever hope that you're right. Sadly, I think that even if he does produce more next season, he will never live up to his 10.5 Million dollar contract. There is no way to sugar coat it, that contract was signed so that the Flames could content right away, and it was always going to be bad in 3, 4 years time.
