Yes, they either decided he didn't fit, or they didn't think they could afford to sign him. So they moved him for a pick. End of story. Don't see a reason to be praising Yzerman for that (or criticizing him)

Will it be a con when Florida sends a 1st for him at the 2026 deadline?

Gotta respect Yzerman. After those 2 losses to Ottawa he saw their chances of making the playoffs were less than 50% and made a decision to sell.
Wish Treliving was as decisive as Stevie.

The Wings and Flames are in different trajectories. The Wings have missed the playoffs 6 and now 7 years coming.
The Flames, rightly or wrongly, went all in during the offseason to try make this a competitive playoff team.

DET is literally tied with OTT in the standings right now, and people are fawning over them for stomping on the gas pedal.
DET has spent two 3rds on young goalies with term. And acquired dozens of other picks. OTT has basically done the opposite.
You also gotta remember how bare DET's cupboards were after so many years of chasing their streak. They wanna build another sustainable contender, not a speed boat with a bunch of holes.

Bruins now have one pick in the first 3 rounds (their 2025 1st) in the next 3 drafts.

I can't blame them. This is likely their last chance to win a cup with this core.
Considering how well they've played so far, adding such quality depth will help them in the upcoming playoff war.
As others have said, the east playoffs are going to be crazy, and amazing to watch.

They'll acquire one for Barkov & Ekblad.

At least he didn't spend any assets on Chiarot. I didn't love their UFA spending spree at the time, but now I think it's totally fine given how disciplined they are being with their other assets

I am not trying to criticize Yzerman here, but I find it hilarious that literally every thing he does, generates "Yzerman is a genius" posts.

The bolded is probably true, but I think BOS has plenty of potential to fall down to the bubble, especially if they go deep this year and Bergeron/Krejci hang them up.

kinda different considering he traded a UFA that was in high demand

The Bertuzzi deal is an expiring contract and easy to sell. The flames have no equivalent. Their exiting contracts are Lucic, Lewis, Ritchie and Stone.
Hronek has an extra year but the Calgary equivalents are more pricy and therefore there’s less of a window to move them.

I added the Hronek deal - Calgary still has no real equivalent. Their players are all expensive and/or have NMC

If the Flames start a rebuild today and are selling and are missing the playoffs 7 years from now I have my doubts some of you would be praising them for it...I have my doubts the franchise would be in Calgary

Yup. The Flames trajectory is to miss the playoffs every other year for 14 years in a row.

I think the Yzerman is great and making assumptions based on zero information is subtle jabs at Treliving after Johnny walked last second.
