You wanna spend assets on a 37 year old with -19 goals saved above expected?

For reference Markstrom is sitting at -0.7.

It’s not a stretch to say that Quick is the very worst goalie playing in the NHL this season.

Ugh no way to refute your point.

I suppose if the team has any intent on minor changes to try to keep the playoff hope alive, I don’t want depth d, or a reclamation project forward.

I’d take an angry quick though, again, assuming cost is minimal which I think it would be.

To answer the OP. No, it's not too early. Perhaps it should be changed to "Too late"?

This is my take: i think Markstrom's going to be ok. I think he's a nice guy who was genuinely happy for Vladar's early success (you can't fake that), but lost confidence. Now that Vladar has shown he's not ready to be #1, Markstrom knows he's needed, and has the green light (from Sutter, and in his mind) to take the net back and play out of his mind.

Not sure if its been mentioned, but Markstrom and his fiancee recently had a kid:

Not saying this is why he's had an off year, or that things will get any better with a newborn, but maybe this gets him out of his funk a little bit... I recall Tanev struggling a bit late last year with a newborn on the way.

P.S. Congrats Jacob!

I'm ready to eat some crow on Marky. I didn't even know his wife was expecting as the Lindholms seemed to get all the press.

I get that might have been affecting Markstrom's play for most of the season. I was super anxious before my kids were born and we even did the amnio test on both of them.

Now that he has a healthy baby it looks like he is back on track!

He’s been a lot better, but too little too late. This season is sunk and now it looks like he’ll drag the team in to drafting even higher.

Hell, who knows, maybe we’ll get in and he’ll be standing in his head.

This is what I've been expecting all year. Waiting for another crack at finals

With the Jets in a nosedive, we are still in it. Just need to keep winning. And if old Marky is back we have a good chance of winning at a good clip.

I wrote POs off a couple weeks ago. But a resurgent Markstrom changes the outlook going forward anyway.

Back to normal Markstrom = POs next year with no other changes to luck or player performance. Back to normal Markstrom with improvement from Huberdeau (very possible) Mangiapane (pretty decent odds), Vladar (or Wolf coming up) = a vey strong team. Really, everyone else has performed up to expectations (moreso in a couple cases, like Zadorov and Dube).

My feeling as well. This team's prospects improve with better goaltending. I'm still not sure that they are elite, but they are a playoff team (likely not this year but I'm enjoying the possibility and scoreboard watching).

Markstrom had been normal before then…..

I don’t know if you can expect/bank on a 34 yrs old to be normal for your success

One of the main reasons this team is not battling for the Pacific division is due to the poor play of Markstrom. The story of the season has been “one more save, one more goal” I thought if Markstrom and Huberdeau could find their game this team would be completely different. Markstrom is the key of the two finding their game and it feels like he is getting close to completely turning it around.

If he does keep it up it wouldn’t surprise me to see this team win 75% of their remaining games.

I think he's a middle tier starter as normal.

If you get that you're fine.

Sure you can - good goalies play into their thirties at a high level all the time.

If he’s been dealing with Baby Brain, I get it. Your head isn’t in it and it doesn’t matter how hard you try, there’s only one thing you’re focused on.

Nominally decent goaltending is a huge help to this team.

Markstrom will be 33 when the season starts. Kuemper was 31 last year, Price was 33 the year before, Khudobin was 33 the year before that, Rask was 31 the year before that (and Halak was 33 and he's still good), Fleury was 32 the year before that (and he's still good), Rinne was 33 the year before that.

Those are just cup winners and finalists, there are plenty of other examples of goalies playing well into mid 30s this year. Anderson and Raanta in Carolina, Anderso in Buffalo, Fleury in Minnie, Varlamov, Talbot is playing ok, Francouz, Elliot rebounded.

The point is it doesn't take much of an improvement for Markstrom anyway, with the one goal and OT losses the Flames had, just a small rebound in form will be good.

When it comes to Mangiapane, I don't think there will be much improvement. He's only scored more than 20 one time. I've always seen him as a 25 goal guy at best. He had a great season with a good team last year but the odds are more that he's in the high teens/low twenties for goals. He gets so many good chances it's hard to watch sometimes.

I hope I have it wrong and he's scores 30 next year.

I agree he’s the guy least likely to bounce back to last year’s production. I think Huberdeau has a body of work indicating that he’s a PPG guy, and Markstrom has just shown he hasn’t forgotten how to goalie. There is a bigger danger that last year was the anomaly for Mangiapane, riding on his WHC performance.

I wonder if he could use a change of line just like Huberdeau. I’d watch Huberdeau with Backlund and Coleman. Backlund likes to carry and Coleman is a net crasher.
