The other top guys aren’t top guys that will win anything though - they’re support pieces . Just eat the next 3 years. Hopefully it’s three years of a rebuild, but more likely it’s three years just like this one.
This team is locked into these deals with players that aren’t key pieces of a contender.

I truly believe he will come back next year and be far better. As for this year , there is not a chance in hell he finds his game . Especially with the pressure of trying to make playoffs. He needs to step away for a while.

Markstrom is 33. There is no comeback in him. Stop selling false hope

The oil destroyed him last year. Even before the playoffs. He is done.

The contracts this team currently has should force them into rebuilding. They’re mediocre, they’re very expensive, and their prospect pool is the poops.
|
One rebuilding move they could do is trade Markstrom for Bobrovsky. I'm sure they could get a nice asset back for a swap like that. and if you buy Bobrovsky out in 2024, it's not that bad.

Well, at the fatal risk of sounding presumptuously optimistic...
The weird thing for me is that the issue with Markstrom, by all outward appearances, seems to be principally mental.
For that reason alone, I think there remains hope that he can salvage some semblance of his career.
He was a runner up for the Vezina last season and this season he's the worst starting goalie in the league and even worse than some backups, most notably his own, all of this with no indication of actual physical injury or deterioration.
So the prospect, regardless of how unlikely, remains that under the right circumstances a switch could be flicked and 'Old Markstrom' could emerge out of apparent retirement.

Flames dominating play to start a game...Goal on the first shot against.
Flames need a big kill on a 4-3 PK in OT...Goal on first OT shot against on a slap shot from the point.
Flames dominating play in the third and fight back to tie it...goal on first half chance on the period on a shot that's along the ice from the circles.
None of the goals are "soft" but they are all saveable, and he's letting too many of those in at the worst times.
Here is where Markstrom ranks by different metrics. (Naturalstattrick, All Situations, 65 goalies have played at least 100 minutes)
Goals Saved Above Average: -3.17 (52nd)
Save Percentage: 0.893 (44th)
High Danger Save Percentage: 0.771 (44th)
Medium Danger Save Percentage: .902 (29th)
Low Danger Save Percentage: .963 (31st)
He's below average in every single metric. There is no defense of his play. Every team gives up high quality chances, and we have stats that show how goalies fair on different types of shots now. IMO he's playing small in his net, playing very passive, and isn't reacting to puck movement well.
And like it or not salary plays a role. He's the 7th highest paid goalie in the NHL, and he's in the bottom 10 among starters (30 goalies have played at least 400 minutes, he ranks 23rd)
The Flames have other problems, but Markstrom (and Vladar's) terrible starts to this season are a big part of it.

This post was from November 9th.
Unfortunately three and a half months later everything here still holds true, and yesterday was another example of it.
63 goals have played over 800 minutes:
Save %: 0.889 (55th)
GSAA: -15.80 (57th)
HDSV%: .830 (32nd)
MDSV%: .850 (59th)
LDSV%: .960 (37th)
He's improved his high danger play, but has just gotten worse at the medium danger instead.

Flames are ruining everyone else's season just by continuing to play Markstrom. At some point, that has to stop one would think.

What you want more Vladar after last night?
Run Markstrom, Vladar obviously can't handle the pressure...he had a shot to take over

Yeah he's had a bad month. But before that he went 9-0-3. Markstrom's had a bad 11 months, and lets in a lot more "Cloutiers".

shots aren't created equal obviously...the first shot was a brutal goal last night
Running Markstom and hoping for the best is the only real option right now, Vladar obviously can handle being a starter yet

Not only that but Marky is your number 1 who has had some good numbers in this league. The way Vlad is playing right now there is no reason not to go to your number 1. Definitely fair earlier in the year when Vlad was playing better but at this point you go to your star goalie and hope he figures it out.
