I’d drive Hanifin to Ottawa for Ottawa’s 1st, never mind the 2nds, though they’d be nice too.

You wouldn't have a job very long with a deal like that.

Arizona always has bundle of drafts for quite a few years now, and yet they're still where they are.

Actually yeah I realize now that Ottawa’s first is more like 15th than the 8th or so I thought it was. Still, if Hanifin is moved it should be for a pick that at least has a decent chance of being top 10. That would be a good enough best piece as long as the rest of the package is solid.

There's a good chance the Preds don't even get a single top-30 pick out of that!

Wonder how Chychrun and Chabot share ice time, they’re both big minute munchers.
Also wonder how this impacts Sanderson. Feels like they have 3 dmen to build around but all 3 are good on the PP might not be stars in their own end.

Ottawa is really trying to win now, but they have all their core signed long term, so they did have the option to be patient.

It's the Dougie Hamilton to Calgary trade.

Arizona: This gives them the best draft pick they were likely to get in the trade, as of today that pick would be 12th. Plus two other 2nd round picks. Think they could have got more had they acted earlier, but this first is likely the best first on the board.

Ottawa: Wanted a young, top pairing d-man to pair with Chabot. This gives them that, and he's a local guy to boot.

I like it for both sides.
Except it's only 2.25 years of term on an injury prone player.

Pick values were all known with Hamilton (15, 45, 52).

This could include a 6-12OA in a great draft, and the 2nds could be anywhere. Heh, one of the seconds is a full year after Chychrun's UFA year.

I wonder if Arizona was only willing to deal with teams that could take on Chychrun's whole salary and not send any salary back

With the picks they have if they could spend money starting this off-season and the next few, they could be very good.

If they can't spend then a young team with high end potential is the only chance they have

Only if you really love late picks.

Doesn't change the fact they got more and the Coyotes held out all this time for the return. That's why they are in the shape they are.

You can also use the draft capital to move in drafts Nashville has a haul.

Not one high end prospect has moved so far. Tons of firsts have and maybe the Oilers traded one of their best prospects, but no top 30 prospects have moved. Arizona did ok because they probably got one in that deal, unless Ottawa takes off and wins a bunch of games down the stretch.

Thats because a 20+ first round pick only has around a 1/3 chance of playing 100 games in the NHL. A top prospect should have much better odds at being much more then that. Fans overvalue picks and are to simplistic in how they bucket them (1st round vs groupings. i.e., 1-5, 6-12, etc.) which is how most GM's talk about them.

Also gotta remember that OTT paid a '23 2nd to dump Zaitsev, which was presumably a factor in facilitating this trade.

The East is super tough, but it's not a great sign when you have to spend this much draft capital just to get into the bubble. Since the last draft:

OUT:
7
1st
39
2nd*
2nd
2nd
3rd
3rd
4th
7th
Matt Murray
Zaitsev
Connor Brown

IN:
2nd (used today)
7th*
Debrincat
Chycrun

Seems like an awful lot for a diminutive winger and injury prone D with 2.25 years to UFA.
