All we are asking for is a fair deal, one that one promised to us by the Liberal government before they were elected into Ottawa. Now they have turned their back on us.
If you have it in you, please take a moment to fill out the letter...it only takes two seconds.

I am posting this here because as a fellow member of CalgaryPuck, I think it is safe to say that we all value our natural resources quite a bit. It is my hope that you will all help us stand up and fight this thing.

Prime Minister Paul Martin needs to keep his promise. Maybe with enough letters he will.

Hard to believe a Liberal government in Canada not keeping election promises.
Remember the abolition of the GST that was part of the platform in the election before last??

 Sheila Copps anyone?

I might have been more sympathetic to Newfoundland's cause if your Premier hadn't pulled the ridiculous stunt of taking all the Canadian flags down. That's the type of juvenile behaviour we've come to expect from the asshats in the Parti Quebecois, not the good people of Newfoundland.

That was a one-day thing to show our disgust at the Gov't of Canada for going back on their word.
So because he decided to pull down the flag you don't think we should get 100% of our resources that we were promised?

 Nice logic.

Just a question but does anyone know if Alberta keeps 100% of all revenues from natural resources?

I'm not sure about that but I know it is a hell of a lot more than what we get right now. We were promised 100% of our resources and now he has changed his mind.

Not picking hairs, but it seems that its more then a one day thing.. with St. John's and the other 2 cities pulling down a week after Williams pulled the legislature's down.

Then, a guy who makes Canadian flag type swimsuits, discontinued his line in protest.
Something tells me selling swimsuits in January in Newfoudland isn't a booming business to begin with.

Newfoundland may have their case, but Williams is, without consulting really any of them, speaking for a lot of people in disassociating all of them from their country.

Is the NFLD government also refusing any monies that come in from the Feds (equalization pymts, fuel excise tax, UI cheques) during this protest...or saying thanks but no thanks to the CBC TV signals....or RCMP?

I can't agree with the tactics used by your Premier.

I'd probably rather have my Premier pulling down the Canada flag in a short-lived tiff than throwing money at the homeless and coming down hard on Gay marriage. To each their own preference in leadership I suppose.

I would agree with you, perhaps help you out, but I'm tired of every frickin time a province doesn't like something, they threaten some sort of walking away from Canada. Quebec, Alberta and now this case.....I'm a proud Canadian and I think it's more than just the province I live in. Just to wake you up over there in Newfoundland, EVERY POLITICIAN GOES BACK ON THEIR WORD, OR BENDS A PROMISE, OR SHAFTS IT'S PEOPLE. That's nothing new. The way of dealing with it is not by tantruming and threatening the country (which a lot of people in my province could learn too).

I disagree with Flame On. It has become clear that the only way Ottawa listens to the provinces is when they throw a tantrum. Its time the provinces start standing up for themselves & quit taking it up the ass from those theives.Year after year, the Liberal Party of Canada steals more of our money & Canadians just accept it because "EVERY POLITICIAN GOES BACK ON THEIR WORD, OR BENDS A PROMISE, OR SHAFTS IT'S PEOPLE"..

Screw that. Its time our elected officials become accountable to their constituents, the provinces & to Canada.

I'm sick of the complacency & apathy in this country. Its like everyone just accepts that politicians are going to lie, cheat & steal so who the hell cares who we elect.

We didn't threaten to leave Canada in any way. we were just showing our disgust for the 'Canadian Government'. one way to show that was by lowering the canadian flag at all government buildings.

Does anyone know the real linkage between the equalization payments and the oil revenue? I do not. I have heard so many conflicting things that it is clear as mud.1. Is there a plan to wean them off equalization?
 2. Way back, did Alberta get a period of time when they kept oil revenue and still took equal. payments?
 3. Is NFLD opposed to gradual lower equalization payments or is any decrease being seen as theft by the fed? Do they see any linkage at all? Should there be?

 Confused in Calgary.

While still accepting equalization payments and all the other handouts Newfoundland gets from the Federal government...

I'm with you on this one. It's money for equalization not an allowance. When a 16 year old gets a good paying job, do you still pay them allowance? Hell no.

One thing most people forget in their haste to smash the Feds is that they have proposed a 16 year period of 100% royalty return to Newfoundland. If you can't get your fiscal house in order during that period, kindly stop drawing on Alberta's wallet.

I agree, the flag thing p*ssed me off as well. There are some things that are off limits, and one of those is the flag.....although I half expected the guy to pull out the zippo as well.

			Let me re-phrase:
If you feel like sending the letter, go for it, I'd really appreciate it. If you don't agree with it then you obviously won't send it.

We are just trying to get what we were promised.

Someone can correct me, but I belive what you are describing is exactly what NFLD calls not getting their resource revenues.

In any case, I seem to be in the minority on this one.

Let'em keep it. The equalization formula will eventually balance out should they start to become a legitimate 'have province', so its not like they'll all be fishing in caddilacs and still getting our money.

Government hand-outs have created an economy with a disincentive to diversify or change. From what I know, the whole economy runs on working just enough to collect a grant or a pogey cheque or whatever, because what's the incentive to do more? If true, the only way that's going to change is if we cut off all the assistance (not likely) or give people the incentive to do more and get ahead.
