Nashville has been a good defensive team with very good goaltending...will be interesting to see how Ekholm looks in Edmonton

This also isn't 2015 vintage Ekholm like some seem to think

It will be interesting to see if Ekholm is actually as good of a defenceman as was advertised or is he a by product of Nashvilles strong defensive systems.

Either way Ekholm = E and E = NG

Oilers' cap next year, with Ekholm, is $75M and they need to sign Bouchard, plus add 7 forwards to the roster

I have said many times, that I think defensemen are very much a product of their situation. Not taking anything away of Ekholm, but it is very different to play D on a well structured, defense-first team than it is to play beside Nurse, on a team that is all offense, all the time

Just look at how much better Tanev looks in Calgary than he did in VAN

The way this trade reads, you'd think this was for Roman Josi. Perhaps Holland was confused...

You can give McDavid all the credit for Barrie's points but none of their other dmen are even close, they will miss him on the PP...which is basically their biggest strength
Not to mention Barrie was pretty strong offensively prior to Edmonton.

Hollands line of thinking for the prospect in the trade was likely something along the lines of;

Schaeffer, Reid Birthplace Edmonton Alberta Favourite Team growing up? Oilers
Holloway, Dylan Birthplace Calgary Alberta Favourite Team growing up? Flames

Lets dump the tarnished, loyal asset.

Hm. Not sure giving up Barrie was a good move for them but we’ll see I guess. I do think that defensively they’ve improved. Probably not a terrible gamble for the Oilers.

A single defensive d-man doesn’t cure a bad defensive team. Others have tried this and it doesn’t work.

The Oilers did have to do something and probably improved slightly...the reality of it though is there is a 99% chance this turns out poorly for them so I'm not sure why so many flames fans are worried about this

unless they win the cup (ha, have you seen the Avs and the teams out east?) they are just older with less prospects/picks in a few months.

Great part about an overhyped trade like this is it will bring all the clowns out of the woodwork

Remember to jot down the usernames for future reference

Ekholm's contract expires after Leon's does too.

When Leon decides if he wants to stay:

Ekholm
Kane
Nuge
Hyman
Kulak
Campbell
Nurse

These are the guys that will still be signed and all will be over 30 and some in their mid 30s. Skinner and McDavid will also be signed but they will be UFA's in a year.

Good chance the prospect pool will be bad too.

They better win, they are setting themselves up to be very bad in 2 years

I guess good for the Oilers in seeing where they need some help vs. accumulating more scoring. This trade doesn't really elevate them nor does it crash them.

First rounders are getting traded like candy right now but for the Oilers and their star heavy win now lineup, it makes some sense I suppose.

I am a little leery of how weak the west looks and how any team could go on a run. But still think any team, Oilers especially, will find playing the Avs like hitting a brick wall. So hopefully they exit the playoffs quickly and then this trade will only look worse as time goes on.
