McCabe is plus 7 on the Hawks this year and has 20 points. 2 more years at $2mil is a good deal for the Leafs. Neither player is a rental.

Return is good for the Hawks for sure though, feels like the Flames could sell on some guys with 1 year left and get a ton. They won't though

The Flames should sell but that boat has sailed last summer

You don’t sell when your key players are in their 30s. They’ll patch the leaks and keep on going

Murray does not want to go through the uncertainty of a rebuild.

Camp 2) Brad Treliving is the one in charge and this is his team, and his vision is the one we are seeing played out. No real emphasis on succession planning or building a deep farm system. Draft capital is a tool to acquire NHL ready players, while we won't trade all of our draft picks away if there is a deal to be had to acquire an NHL player he will likely lean towards NHL player over future assets.

Either way he is not doing a very good job. If it's Camp 1 he is failing to achieve any consistent level of success, with an edict of "compete now" he has pretty little success to hang his hat on. Camp 2, well that's even more of a mess because there is no built in excuse of "Murray told him to".

Media guys like steinberg and Kerr have straight up said that ownership is involved and is setting the direction: no rebuild and get into the playoffs.

Tre needs approval on moves ( e.g. the story about Zucker). I'm sure he is "free" to explore and try and get approval for moves that align with ownerships desired direction.

There are defintely some guide rails restricting his moves though. And he is not setting the direction.

These returns make me wonder what the total haul would have looked like if the Flames hadn't inked Huberdeau, Weegar, and Kadri, and instead simply stood pat after the Tkachuk trade, and then traded JH and MW at the deadline.

Heck of a lot of futures I would think, and probably a better draft pick of their own.

Does it actually matter to anyone whether the trades happen in the week leading up to deadline or on the day itself?

Even people constantly saying tsn in shambles, but really tsn doesn’t care. They even joke about it every single year. But really the content and talking points are identical regardless of when the trades happen.

You would have the 1st, schwindt and 3rd.

Gotta think huberdeau and weegar both return atleast another 1st+ decent prospect.

You'd be looking at 3 1sts+ 3 prospects + some lower picks at the minimum.

I'm still ok with the JH and MW signings, but the Kadri signing is the one that has me worried this team is in trouble similar to San Jose a few years back.

It's taken awhile for the Sharks to slowly fix the mess, but they feel like they finally are just starting the rebuild after being stuck with bad contracts for years. If they retain big salary on Karlsson, they are still in rough shape unles they win the draft lottery.

The "New San Jose Sharks" is exactly what I worried about when these contracts were signed too (well, JH and NK's contracts anyway).

Only upside is (1) if the players play up to those contracts for the majority of their duration, or (2) they really don't, and a rebuild is ultimately forced because the team simply can't afford to be good.

But if it's the latter scenario that plays out, the "what ifs" will be pretty immense when it comes to what a rebuild might have looked like.

3 biggest names are still on the board, but could all be gone before friday.

I guess with Meier it was the big 4.

I’m not worried about Huberdeau. Even if he doesn’t live up to the contract some years all it takes is 1 good year. Sharks had to deal with a flat cap too.

Karlsson was a contract that wasn’t on anyone’s radar. 100 point season now he’s a potential quality pick up.

JH is young enough that if we are way out of playoffs and he’s playing like he can he can be moved especially when the cap goes up.

But we could be stuck in the middle for a few years waiting to start a rebuild. If people thinking rebuilding sucks it’s worse when you have to wait just to start one

Kane is the only big name that comes to mind. Guys like Meier this year are the flavour of the month. Not to the degree others have in years past (ie: Zucker, Hamonic), as he has put up multiple goal seasons, but he’s really been propped up. Even McCabe. If teams are willing to pay through the nose like this, ownership are being classic corporate types and not looking at the long term benefits of creating a sustainable winner. Yesterday I was meh about dealing this deadline but after these recent trades it’s looking more lucrative than ever. Some serious cockmeasuring in the east in particular. Gotta cash in.

Camp 2, well that's even more of a mess because there is no built in excuse of "Murray told him to".
