Thinking this might finally be Toronto's year to win a round. They look like a good team and I've liked their additions this year.

If Lafferty is getting a second, Trevor Lewis should fetch a third

Makes me wonder when BT is going to look to cash in, in a lucrative draft year.

Makes me wonder if BT is even in the driver seat for those decisions anymore.
I'd be willing to wager he wants to deal, but isn't permitted to.

I wonder if at some point the NHL will limit how far in the future a draft pick you can trade away? If they do nothing, at some point teams will be trading away picks 10 years in the future.

This already happens all the time in the NBA, I'm not sure it's seen as a problem in general.
Anyway, the eastern conference does seem to be turning into a bit of an arms race. I wonder if that will create more of a seller's market over the next few days.

Jake frikkin McCabe worth a first round draft pick, lol. I know the Sabres are pushing for a playoff spot but I kind of want them to sell a player or two. At this rate we could get two firsts for Olofsson or something ridiculous.

I think the future pick trades right now have more to do with the perceived strength of the 2023 draft.

Chicago is going to have so many draft picks, and they haven't even traded Kane yet.

Same. Give my Captain a cup.
Also don't know if it was brought up in any other thread but shoutout to him for setting the league record in blocks yesterday.
Good depth move by the Leafs, but really makes you wonder why the Flames aren't capitalizing on the trade market.

I guess there are two camps to BT:
Camp 1) Murray Edwards is the one who has given the edict of compete now. No re-tool or rebuild. BT does not have the freedom to do what he wants and has to make moves that are not future focussed, but on competing right now. Make the playoffs and see what happens. Murray does not want to go through the uncertainty of a rebuild.
Camp 2) Brad Treliving is the one in charge and this is his team, and his vision is the one we are seeing played out. No real emphasis on succession planning or building a deep farm system. Draft capital is a tool to acquire NHL ready players, while we won't trade all of our draft picks away if there is a deal to be had to acquire an NHL player he will likely lean towards NHL player over future assets.
Either way he is not doing a very good job. If it's Camp 1 he is failing to achieve any consistent level of success, with an edict of "compete now" he has pretty little success to hang his hat on. Camp 2, well that's even more of a mess because there is no built in excuse of "Murray told him to".

Apparently the Oilers were interested in Lafferty. Welp, that’s another one they didn’t get. Guess they’ll have to go all in on Erik Karrelson now.

Usually he does his business early, so could be, or he's standing pat. Or worse, waiting to see where the team is on deadline day, as if it's not obvious, meanwhile the market is closing.
