I started reading "will not participate in today's practice"... and expected "for possible trade reasons"

Congratulations to them on the birth or their baby boy!
I'm sure the season has been stressful for Marky, this is a wonderful moment for them.

No wonder he’s having a bad year. He’s rightfully focused on his wife and her pregnancy! Congratulations!

Congrats to Markstrom and his wife!
When my wife and I were expecting, it was incredibly difficult to focus on school/work, so I can imagine the last few months must have been really tough for him.

I find it interesting that the media is a little late to the math (hope)

Winnipeg now the target on a 97 point pace (.592)

To get to 98 points Calgary has to go 15-5-2 which is a .727 pace the rest of the way. If they lose both to Boston and Toronto in regulation they'll need to go 15-3-2 or .800

This is over isn't? Or am I being to cynical?

I've been thinking that as well. Just don't see this team going on that pace. Basically, they need to go on a 8 or 9 game win streak to even make it interesting.

You're not being cynical, just a realist. This team has shown no indications that they can go on such a run at this point. It if was going to happen, it probably would have.

Truth be told, a lot of seasons for many teams are made or broke on such a run, but they typically happen in the middle of the season somewhere, at least for teams outside of the top or bottom 5. A big heater or losing streak sandwiched somewhere between average results. People see the standings at the end and forget that most of the season was average, but defined by a 15-20 game stretch.

I mean, it could happen. The Flames could go on a heater to end the season and go into the playoffs hot. It just seems really unlikely at this point.

The team they have the best chance to catch up to is Minnesota since they play them twice. Even then, they will need at least one more win than Minnesota in the remaining 20 games that they don’t face each other and hope that Minnesota gets pulled down to a wild card spot.

If another team goes on a bit of a dud from now till the end of the season is honestly their best chance of getting in even if they turn things around to have a solid stretch from now till the end of the season.

Seattle would be the target but they were at their best with Burakovsky in the lineup and will be getting him back for the home stretch. Maybe too little too late, but that will provide a boost for them. Though goaltending, always bad for them this year, is really being exposed of late.

I've learned over the years that it's never over until the math says so but it sure feels like it's been over for some time in regards to the Flames. When's the last time the Flames had an 82 game season where they couldn't put together more than a 3 game winning streak? Heck they haven't won back to back games since 01/21 and 01/23. Hard to imagine them going 15-5-2 given they haven't put together back to back wins in over a month.

Unless somebody goes on a pretty drastic slump (which isn't impossible.)

22 games is still a quarter of the season, somebody loses 3 straight and Flames win three straight an it changes the whole complexion.

But really they should be planning from a trade deadline perspective like it's done and then if anything happens post deadline it's gravy.

The next two games are difficult, but both teams will be playing in Calgary on the back end of a back to back. Hopefully Flames are able to take advantage of that, but they haven’t been able to do that with any regularity this season.

For this team, the only thing I could see spurring a run like this would be something along the lines of Wolf coming up to start 18 of the last 22 games and pitching shutouts 60% of the time.

It's a massive shot in the dark. But this team is just not going to get over the hump this year without some sort of herculean performance over the next 6 weeks and I don't think it's coming from anyone currently on the roster.

Maybe this is Rocky 2, and the baby sparks Markstrom to a career winning streak.
