And I think we've all concluded that it was still a pretty good deal.
Can we sell our souls for 3 Cups? Is there a line? Where do we sign?

They didn't sell their souls, lol. They rebuilt the team, got high picks, drafted great players, won 3 cups, and will now cash in by trading those players, finish low, and get a good pick.
I guess it averages out though, finish near the top a few times and then finish at the bottom a few times. The Flames just stay in the middle consistently.

The arms race between Boston and the Rags is in full effect, and Tampa I think will still have something to say. One of those teams, who don't make it, especially Boston or NY, the offseason cleanup will be ugly.

The Hawks didn’t sell their souls, they signed their vets to terrible contracts and tanked their rebuild. Seabrook, Keith were offered terrible contracts, the Towes deal did not end well and the Seth Jones deal was a disaster. Then trading away Dach and Debrincat, they’re two best young players. They’ve been horribly managed for years now.

Selling souls meaning they went for it at the time, all in, loading up for their window with long term deals to keep the hit low for a couple years, fully knowing they'd need things such mysterious allergies to Hossa, to scrape by on the scorched earth side of those long term contracts.

So who should the Flames be targeting from the Rangers to “help” with their cap?

I wish we could loan players like in Soccer. I'd give Boston Lindholm for the rest of the season.

Just loan Markstrom to Edmonton tbh.

Cap friendly has them as having 12 forwards, 6 defenseman, and 2 goalies right now to have 437 k left in cap space. The only guy to move that I see is Tyler Motte who is 1.35. So that may not be enough out.

Kaapo Kakko is the guy they will move if they get Kane.

I don't follow the Rangers that closely but hasn't that kid line of Chytyll, Kakko, and LaFrenier been a big part of their recent surge hasn't it? I would think they would rather leave that unit in tact and take out a 4th line type plus picks. I don't think Kane will cost too much asset wise since he's only really willing to go one place.
What do you know that I'm missing in my thoughts process?

Why would they move him when everyone knows Kane will only go there
That’s going to limit the return

This 3rd party retaining salary seems to be happening more often this season. Has this been a big thing in previous years?

It looks like the first one was in 2020 when Lehner was traded to Vegas from Chicago and Toronto retained a bit of cap hit for a 5th round pick.
There were 3 such trades in 2021, Savard, Foligno, and Janmark. Last year, there was only 1, Domi.
So far this season, there have been 2, O'Reilly and Orlov.

I imagine because they want him for their playoff run and if he stays in Chicago he probably stays there beyond this season. Just my guess.

The Keith deal was spectacular . You have completely missed the boat there.

The Oilers aren't winning the cup with that squad even if they make a significant addition.

I would have thought they'd just trade CHI their other first rounder, or their first from next year. No reason to let go of Kakko.

Kane to Rangers is done.... just can't announce till later in the week due to cap implication. Crazy times.
