Flames are however in a key phase where they need to make decisions,
After this summer is over the following are going into their UFA season
Lindholm, Toffoli, Hanifin, Tanev, Zadorov,
While these are not the types to be moved at the deadline,,
Key decisions are required this summer

To me, Tanev is the only one you build around. If the price is cheap for Hanifin, sure too - but it won't be. Lindholm will get a larger contract elsewhere. The rest are aging and while good now, not worth pursuing in a team looking to rebuild from the draft or good trades.

The Flames have several assets of value and it’s not like they will come back next year with the exact lineup. I don’t have a crystal ball, and neither do you, so I’m not going to guess what that team will look like. But to suggest next year is a foregone outcome based on where they are now is a bit lazy, but go ahead and wallow in your negativity.
|
No but you should realize where you are at and what you are and make the right moves so you can have a better year next year. Right now it’s a sell and take advantage of the overpayment from the ‘contenders’. Anybody with no good long term outlook should be available.

With a weird Friday deadline my guess is teams would rather get things done early this week so new players can play in the scheduled weekend-heavy games.
With 20 something games to go, teams aren't waiting to see how the next one or two games go to decide.

Really wished Flames made little trades like the Kravtsov or Gurianov. Guys that need a change of scenery deals. Instead our little trades are for guys like Ryan Carpenter.

I think the issue for me is this season we’re going into contract years for lindholm, backlund, toffoli, hanafin, zadorov, kylington and dube (rfa).
After what has transpired this season, the flames simply can’t go into a ‘wait and see’ approach and hope that the core bounces back (which a possible outcome).
If they do that:
Best case: the team does well on the backs of key UFAs , which you just can’t trade at the deadline, as you’re competitive.
Worst case (most likely): flames are battling for a wildcard spot again as a middle of the pack team (again flames won’t be willing to move guys if they have any prospect of 2 home playoff games).
They HAVE to have a plan on what they want to do with the above list of guys ASAP. As they should be gauging trade values now as teams could be more willing to pay high assets for the extra year (flames wouldn’t have traded their first for an expiring toffoli last deadline). That’s not to say moves happen now , it could be more likely to materialize in the offseason.
The challenge I see in all this is how does treliving fit?? How much authority, autonomy, interest does he even have for these key decisions impacting the franchise 2 offseasons from now, when he might only be here for the next few months?

I think it's going to be a quiet deadline. It's a game of musical chairs. Toronto has made their move. Boston has as well. The Rangers will get Kane. The Devils will get Meier.
The deadline will be a lot of tinkering but not much more.

Okay, sure.
If there’s something out there that the Flames can’t say no to, why would they?
In any event it’s moot because none of us on this forum know what conversations/offers are out there.
I’m sure the Flames are well aware of where they are at, a 12 year old knows that. You assume to know what the ‘right’ moves are but without knowing any specifics, how can you be so sure?
Does Lindholm to a contender for package similar to ROR make sense, and what team is offering that? (As an example)

Guys that were projected with skill?
Lazar and Shinkaruk after the only ones that come to mind. But if you throw Lindholm into that, he popped here.

Barbashev to LV. Would have been better for Grier to keep stringing LV along until Meyer trade is done with NJ. LV must have felt they were out.

The injuries are more concerning but his skill and leadership are important for a rebuilding team. That's my thought on it.

This team has come full circle. They're back in cap-jail, not a playoff team, and have a bottom-half prospect pool. Wonderful conclusion to nearly a decade of rubbish.

This sounds like "wizardry" to me!

After the lose and with all these trades, you just know BT is going to go give a 2nd+ for Schenn

Not so sure, if you factor the 1 to 2 weeks before the east teams have already made interesting moves. (Rangers, Bruins, Leafs). Devils and Rangers again are likely to make more moves. My guess Canes will also make a trade.
West teams, Jets, Vegas have made trades, my guess Kings and Oilers will make a trade to improve
Nothing massive, but there will be movement.

If Ownership wants to push for a playoff spot, and BT isn't so sure he wants to go all in then this will likely end up being a wait it out approach where nothing at all gets done for the Flames. I can totally see that happening, which isn't the worst thing, but far from ideal. This team has shown at this point they're not up to snuff, and should be selling high where possible. Especially on older guys. Would be nice to get out from under Coleman's deal among others.

Flames trade Lindholm, Hanifin, Backlund, Tanev, Toffoli, Zadorov for seven 1st round picks, three 2nds, four 3rds and Teddy Blugar
