I have no issue with teams using cap space as a tradable asset. It can help to make their rebuilding a little more efficient. When teams like Arizona make it their purpose for existing, it’s a little irritating though.

Salary Cap is purely financial
I guess there are some things we could look at. We could ban third party salary retention, or ban salary retention altogether. I think salary retention helps sellers and buyers but hurts the teams in-between. The tiebreaker may be that getting rid of salary retention would make the trade deadline much more boring.
|
We could ban teams being able to cancel a players $7million contract allowing a small market team to get them for nothing too.

Lakers traded for Gasol but had drafted players on the roster. Also traded for Davis with a bunch of good young players.
Look at thr standings those big market teams suck.
Plus the NBA is a small roster you really can't do that in the NHL.

You're forgetting that the only reason Golden State was able to retain its star players was because it's a large market.
If Curry, Thompson and Green were drafted by OKC or other small market teams, they'd be long gone.

He’ll have say though and doesn’t care about the Rangers future. But I bet he cares about his legacy in Chicago. They’ll get assets.

All we need is to get on a roll win at least 4-5 games build Marky up hopefully just get in the playoffs go from there. We have a chance I feel flames are playing better.

Kane has been ridiculously productive in recent weeks...the guy has been amazing, no matter the quality of his linemates. He can elevate any team that gets him. For me, I'd like to see him challenge Mikita's 'Hawk records, so if trade scenarios fall through, I wouldn't be adverse to see him extended. The 'Hawks will need to reach the Cap floor, and he would deserve both the extension money and the opportunity to re-write the 'Hawk record book. His ability to play with youngsters has been proven over the years, so he would not be out of place on a developing squad.

I wonder if you can do triple or quadruple retention? Is there anything stopping a team from doing something like that where a $10 million player can be in your lineup for $625,000 or less?

The max the CBA allows is for double retention on any player. And each team can retain a max 50% of what is remaining, or maximum 75% of the cap hit.

I think there is a good chance he goes back there next year, especially if the Hawks get Bedard.

if you're talking about Evander Kane, then yeah that #### is shady AF. I think think the league may have looked at San Jose's salary situation that is already horrendous and let them get away with one.

SJ and LA have gotten away with really egregious contract terminations.

The only reason Kane wants to go to nyr is because of playing with Artemi panarin.kane was pist when they traded him to Columbus .they are great friends like jonny and Monahan

Okc paid Durant Westbrook and Paul George.
The NBA again is a horrible comparison. They have 4 year max contract lengths and half the leagues moved around.
Milwaukee kept Giannis and Midelton they make moves.
Super teams are rare in the NHL.

In fairness, it was always going to be.
You've got a highly paid guy on the tail-end of his career with some injury issues, this is as pure a rental as they come.
The Hawks really have nothing to lose here, whatever they get is gravy because if they were planning on re-signing Kane for another year or two after this deal it would have been for a lot less money regardless and, its not off the table.
Regardless of the return, the Hawks win here unless they have to give up something substantial to whatever the 3rd team is, which, if that were the case they could just as easily not bother.

I hope it happens and then the Rangers lose in round 1. Always fun to see stacked teams fall, but especially in this case when Adam Fox is on the team!

No player is taking a discount to stay with a small market team.
No player is choosing a small market team at the deadline if they have NMC/NTC.
The salary cap structure is starting to fail in front of our eyes and over time- there will be complaints from the owners amongst each other. The whole reason salary cap was implemented was to level the playing field in the first place.
|
I know he's not a star - he's barely a roster play - but Michael Stone refuses to play for anyone other than Calgary. There are some players that prefer big markets, and some who prefer small. Look at Johnny Gaudreau - Columbus isn't New York. Basically, you're wrong. There are plenty of players who will be happy to play on an NHL team no matter where it is. Big metropolitan centers will *always* have a draw for some, and short of running a league with teams only in those locations, not much can be done about it. Quit whining.

Chicago Blackhawks star right winger Patrick Kane has left the team ahead of Saturday night's game against the San Jose Sharks and returned to Chicago, the team announced Saturday.
Kane's departure is sure to reignite speculation of his eventual trade to the New York Rangers, who are considered the favorite to land his services ahead of the NHL's March 3 trade deadline.
"As of today, he has flown back to Chicago to, I think, until the situation rectifies itself either way," coach Luke Richardson said after Chicago's morning skate on Saturday.
