Lots of tattoos here including some very visible ones, my biggest lesson is if you're going for a large visible piece, research the crap out of artists and open up that wallet.

With that said, one of my favourite tattoo genres is the sucky panther. The original is...well..terrible. The memed versions of it are absolutely rad and I would totally rock one.

Spoiler!

I died when I saw the green pimp wearing a gold chain with a Hyundai logo, too funny.

My only tattoo is a tattoo of me getting my first tattoo. If you look real close you can see the version of me in the tattoo has a tattoo and that itself is me getting a tattoo. I asked for deeper inception but the tattoo artist said that was the best he could do without doing a full back tattoo or making it smudgy.

I got my first tattoos at 19. Small wings on my back, between my shoulderblades, just black-and-white flash. An angel wing and a devil wing. I got them just to get them, because I knew I wanted tattoos, but also knew that I could end up obsessing over getting something 'meaningful' for my first one and then never getting one. So I just grabbed an idea and went in and got them.

Didn't get another until I was in my 30's, now have 4 large-ish tattoos: upper chest, left ribs, left shoulder, and I just got those first small wings covered up with a much larger tattoo that fills the middle of my upper back.

Spoiler!

Upper chest and left shoulder didn't hurt all that much, felt like a thumbtack being scraped over a mild sunburn is how I'd describe it. Ribcage hurt like almost nothing else. That was a 5-6 hour marathon of torture. Middle of my back was also pretty bad, bad enough that I immediately sent my wife a text saying "You gotta remind me of this pain if I start talking about another tattoo."

I'm 42 now and I think I'm likely done with tattoos. I have a couple of ideas that are still kicking around, I kinda-sorta want something on my right arm to balance out the tattoos on my left side, and I think hand-roses look seriously badass, but I'm a teacher and there aren't a lot of schools that are okay with hand-tattoos.

A couple wild stories of my tattoos, my tattoo artist for my biggest piece has some wild stories of people and things he has (or hasn't) tattooed. A woman once asked for him to tattoo a puss-filled vagina with teeth on her face. He absolutely refused it. I couldn't imagine staring at something that grotesque for hours, let alone having it on your face permanently. She ended up finding an artist who did it for her.

I dont have too many crazy stories with mine, but I got my first one at 15 years old in Mexico after sneaking off to a market. The only other one was on my most recent piece where I was getting the inside of my bicep (very close to my arm pit) tattooed and I actually fell asleep for about an hour and a half.

I'm a blank canvas, but my girl has major regrets about the one on the back of her neck, as does my buddy's wife in the same place.

Few things in life bring me as much joy as bad tattoos.

Is there a more poignant and literal symbol for bad life choices? It’s beautiful.

That (inside of bicep near the armpit) sounds like it would be a tender and painful spot?

Ish, it's not too bad. There's a mix of muscle and fat there but to get that area tattooed I had to have my arm behind my head with my hand almost touching my opposite shoulder. That caused parts of my arm to go a little numb and reduced the feeling. Tattoos to me mostly feel like a sunburn with a few areas as exceptions, so it's really not bad.

The worst areas were, in order:

The elbow - holy ####, that was almost enough to make me tap out. Bone rattling throughout the entire arm and zingers up into the shoulder.

The weird tendons above (below?) the wrist - big pains there shooting all the way up the arm and even into the trapezius.

The hand - while not as bad as the elbow, it feels like the needle keeps rattling off the bone, plus both the hand and elbow needed 2 passes of ink on separate visits to have a well finished product.

Tatted skin does have an appeal to me

For some reason I think it suits guys way more than girls though, outside of anything on the face or neck (terrible)

For girls, it has to be in specific places where they're more subtle - inside of forearm, wrist, bottom of the neck, side of torso, ankle .. in those areas they can look nice

Nope, thigh tattoos do not look great in most cases - especially those huge mandalas .. just no

I like my first tattoo I just hated the placement in retrospect. I didn't know what I was doing and I let someone else decide the location/orientation. That was a bit foolish.

I'm getting over it with time though. Coming back around to being fine with it

At least it's a fun talking point a lot of times as it is a very personalized design I created myself

I'm not a tattoo guy, but firmly believe in the "to each their own" philosophy.

Growing up the only person I knew that had a tattoo was my neighbor at the end of the street. He had an anchor on his arm, and I think the name of the boat her served on when he was in the Navy. He said he got it in honor of his cremated that he lost.

I get that. It stuck with me, and I always thought a tattoo should be something meaniful that honors something most people don't experience.

When I was younger I used to think that random people getting a butterfly or barbed wire would devalue the memorial tattoo, but I don't think that anymore.

A few years ago I was away at meetings where a fellow board member recently got a forearm tattoo. It was well done but still fresh so it was itchy and the skin was peeling. It looked awful (not the tattoo, that was really well done, just the healing experience). Solidified by wimpiness and desire to not get one. Haha.

That said, I'm not going to say I'm never going to get one, but the right circumstances would need to present themselves.

Also when I was a kid my mother told my brother and I if we ever got a tattoo she'd cut it off with a cheese grater. So yeah, even now as semi-full grown adults neither my brother nor I are inked.

Its funny talking to my Tattoo guy how many people didn't listen to him about post care and basically wrecked their tattoos.

I didn't have any problems with mine with itchiness and the peeling really didn't last that long.

I also found the "after" part pretty minor. I'm booked for another one next week and honestly this thread popping up this week just makes me more excited about it!
