Coyotes trade Mayo to Vegas for a 5th and Weber contract

Coyotes get a contract to help them get to the cap floor, Vegas clears cap space for this year and beyond. Looks like a win/win.https://twitter.com/user/status/1628499987587039232 |

Trade is OK for Arizona but better for Vegas.

Really going out on a limb here but Vegas will end with one of Karlsson, Kane or Chychrun.
 Its what they do.

They couldn't get rid of Mayo on waivers so they got Vegas to take him in exchange for a 5th as long as they took on a contract that's likely insured. Makes sense to me

Absolute Phoenix legends. Weber's number will be raised to the rafters.
Vegas manages to get rid of contracts - again.

it's really sad that there's a franchise in the NHL that exists only to take on cheap dead cap space in order to stay above the salary floor.

This seems terrible for Arizona. Mayo is making league minimum and taking Weber helps out Vegas immensely. The best they could do is a fifth for taking on almost 8 million in cap?

They need the $8 M to reach the floor, they would've done it if it's real money.

a job for Carey Price, maybe?https://twitter.com/user/status/1628507909268320259
but yeah, pretty embarrassing for a franchise to have that kind of reputation.

How does insurance work in these situations though? My understanding was that teams take out insurance on certain players, which will cover a portion of the salary if the player gets injured. Can a team actually trade an insurance policy along with a player? It doesn't seem like something insurance companies would allow, and I couldn't see the Coyotes being able to purchase one for a player that will never play again. Does insurance follow a player to another team, even if they are the ones that didn't take out the policy?

Unless it is the player that took out his own insurance policy, which takes the team off the hook for paying him. I am not sure why a player would take on that expense since contracts are guaranteed anyway.
