Even if Weegar is overpaid with his new deal (which I don't think he is) it's to the tune of 500K-750K MAX.
It's not a contract that is going to be in the way for this team. And if they choose to move him, there will be a healthy market.
A long list of other things to worry about.

No, but he is a very good transition offensive player. It's just that the Flames don't really play that style of trading chances. It's harder for him to use his natural abilities on the rush in this system.

There is NO WAY he would be worse than Rasmus. Try him out!

Disagree.

Andersson and to a lesser degree Hanifin have better offensive instincts. They're better at takin the puck down the wall, and they're better and finding shooting lanes.

Weegar is a great suppression defenseman, and he's good transitioning the puck but he's not elite in the offensive zone at all.

He reminds me a bit of Giordano in the offensive zone. I always thought his decision making on shooting was off.

Actually Rasmus reminds me of Gio in his last few years on the point. That stretch where he had 2 pp goals in 40+ games! and one of them went off a dmans butt that was going 10 feet wide.

Would NEVER shoot the puck so the Pkers would just lay off the point.

If you don't shoot you can't be an effective point man... Still can't believe he didn't try Stone on PP1.

Besides the stats speak for themselves. We are a bottom 8 pp in the league and can't score a crucial PP goal to save our lives.

He’s not bad. BUT

If you can trade him for Debrincat this summer we should do it. Kylington can take his old spot back and our D core is fine

Kylington is nowhere near the level of Weegar. Trading him for a one-dimensional scoring winger is not a good decision for team success.

I think he's been fine, if not good. Won't be overpaid even when his new deal kicks in as the cap will also go up.

The fact that Valimaki has more goals and points than him is a bit off-putting though.

Wait, hold the phone here. Is this actually a narrative? That's nuts. He is absolutely underpaid on his new deal.

Yeah there's some that are expressing concerns about that contract going forward.
I don't see it though. It's fine.

Okay, I can see there being concerns about it "going forward" in the sense that there always should be concern about the later stages of a long deal that starts when a guy is 30... But not for a while yet.

Maybe people are lumping him in with Huberdeau.

The Sutter system doesn't lend itself well to high scoring D at 5 on 5, certainly not in the way that Weegar was generating most of his points in Florida (off the rush!)

IMO Weegar is our best defenseman, and it's not particularly close. Tanev is close defensively but rarely activates on offense.

Granted Kylington is indeed coming back and if he does, he'd be one year not playing at the NHL level. Can he still have his old spot back?

Debrincat is about to get walked to free agency on the Tkachuk contract.

That wouldn't be the best asset management unless you're after cap space and think Weegar will be a boat anchor.

I’m sure it’s been said but Weegar reminds me of Brodie.

You notice the pizzas and somehow the offense always leaves you wanting more.
Teams sure miss those guys when they don’t have them though.

I've never seen Brodie beat the #### out of anyone.

Can we start a thread called, "Dennis Gilbert is good"? I think he deserves props for how he's played, I enjoy watching him. He was really rude to Lawson Crouse in the first there.

Subtracting Weegar has hurt Florida the most.

He's blossomed wonderfully here in the second half.

Weegar has piled up the points the past month too. He deserves it after having shown he's a stud defensively all year thus far, he's been incredible.
