Last week of February and they still haven't been able to put together a winning streak or signs of breaking out. It's not looking good for this team as it just seems like this is one of those seasons where it doesn't work out for a variety of reasons.

Good write-up. It is tiring to see this over and over again, but the Flames really did out play the Flyers. It wasn't particularly close by the eye test or stats.
Out goaltended and terrible powerplay did them in. (And another post, where everyone, including the goaltender, thought it was in).

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

This must be the most god-awful season to try and write stories for every game. How many different ways can you talk about basically the same thing playing out over and over again.

Absolutely.
- Flames out shoot the opposition but lose
- Lots of shot volume not enough high quality
- Don't finish enough of the high quality chances they do create
- Goaltending isn't bad on a goal by goal basis, but totals vs shots against lacking
Every single game.

Chucky used to practice his net front shooting/tipping skills daily. The forwards on this team need to go back to skills camp and learn how to snipe. Toffoli is the closest thing we have to a true sniper. The rest of them, maybe Backlund excepted, made the big show and don’t appear to work on their shooting skills. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Not taking a shot at Backlund, because he has been incredible this year, but early in the first period he took that shot from in the slot with about 75% of the net open, and...he fires it right at the goalie.
Then again, he made up for it with that snipe later on.

There's been plenty of Flames teams that missed the playoffs because they just weren't good enough but this team is different. I can't remember a team that was good enough to make the playoffs but simply couldn't get out of their own way with self inflicted wounds and bad luck. The amount of goal posts and close calls that haven't gone their way seem so much higher than normal to me.

Agreed.
Since Xmas I've been looking at this season as just a random nothing works out season. The Ying to last year's everything worked out campaign.
It's just not going to happen.

Or it will. Crappy regular season but scrape into the playoffs and actually do something in the playoffs unlike last year.
There's my positivity for the day!

I realize a lot of people will say in regards to the offense, that "if it happens over a large enough sample size, you can't blame luck". And that's true to some extent.
But the data suggests the flames are generating so much that even with lack of finish, they are doing enough offensively to win most nights. If you look at their actual goal totals (which adjust for lack of finishing), it still outpaces the expected goals against almost consistently.
So while better finishing would be great, it's not why they're losing. They're losing because the flames goalies aren't making enough medium danger saves relative to where the league average is.
To me, that's why you call up Wolf. It would be a shame to throw away a good season because of bad goaltending when you potentially have the solution in house.
