So they got nothing to lose in calling up Wolf to try to salvage this season. If he's gonna be as a great as some hope he'll be, this could be his moment if he can help carry the team to the playoffs. If he doesn't perform well enough in a couple starts? That's okay, send him back down and treat this as a learning experience for him. He's still very young and can continue on that development path if he ain't ready yet.
What do the Flames have to lose by giving it a shot?

I’m pretty sure Markstrom is still Darryl’s boy

Sounds like they've trained him nicely for the parent team
If he can stop 92.9% of the same kind of ten bell chances then we need to call him up right away

The mess that was the catalyst for this thread. The team is not a rookie goalie away from turning this around. Especially when you have defensemen exchanging the goat horns every game by exposing your netminder to such excruciating breakdowns while your forward core can't beat 3rd stringers.
This is a bad idea, but I understand the frustration that leads to it.

This is the only move I want the Flames to make. Their advanced stats outside of goaltending, indicate that just average goaltending will make a significant difference. This is not a playoff team with Markstrom.
I remain optimistic that they him up, and give him 10 games. Fortunately, the Wranglers are in a great position (1st) and can afford to lose him to the big club, to see what we got.

They're not a rookie goalie away from being a contender, but they're a blue chip 4 time player of the year rookie away from fighting with Seattle, LA and Vegas for the division, probably

So they call him up to be an improved version of mediocre?
There are some unfavorable risks to this move, and given the state of the team I believe it is not worth those risks just to tread familiar territory.

What to do with Markstrom?
Someone in a PGT mentioned burying him in the minors, doubtful that would happen, but the overall lack of direction with this franchise is sickening.

With Wolf in net we win today's game, it is as simple as that. Goalies need to make saves, show me a singular team without defensive breakdowns. Wolf thrives in high danger chances, he is the only reason Wranglers are top of the league.
Any time Wolf is not in net Wranglers/Heat get ~.890 save percentage this and last season. We play Wolf, we make the playoffs its that simple.
I really think that this team is good, we are just buried by one of the worst goaltending in the league.
We have a top 3 goalie prospect in the entire league who can save our season, and he is in the next room

They call him up because they are not going to sell at the deadline, they want to make the playoffs. And there is a pretty good chance he gives them the best chance to make the playoffs.

Press box. If you want to save his dignity, make up some minor, nagging injury.

Mediocre? No I think he would fare very well actually
That with being the 2nd best shot suppressing team in the league
A half blind grandma in goalie pads could be an improved version of mediocre

Just Oiler-Smith LTIR him.
Seems to be the popular move nowadays with no investigative due diligence from the powers that be

Based on...his statistics outside of the NHL? He has looked impressive and I'm very encouraged at what he can do someday on the Flames. I'm not convinced he's a better NHL goalie than Vladar right now.
Speaking of which, Dan should have been getting the workload for a while. It's the change I would like to see and is the smarter decision to make all the way around (over calling up Wolf).

We won't see wolf unless there is an injury or a trade. I'm not sure if there is a desire from management to trade markstrom, or a market if there is. So really it's about trading the vladar tandem for a wolf tandem, and I don't think that usage would change under Sutter.

The Flames decided to give this bum a contract that doesn't end until June 2026. He isn't going anywhere.
Those Weegar, Huberdeau, and Kadri contracts are looking worse and worse with each passing day. Really makes it hard to be optimistic about the future of the franchise.

Have the FlMes won more than 2 in a row all year? I can't recall.

I have mixed feelings on it.
If you call him up now, what do you do with the other guys? Send Markstrom to the AHL?
If it doesn't go well, what does that do for Wolf's development?
I see the reasoning for why but there may be too much risk that it's just not worth it this season.
Get him ready for next season, make a few other major changes and at least we go into next season excited to watch again.
