Opinion or otherwise, coming down firm one way or another doesn’t make much sense to me. I have to assume that 99% of what we read here is opinion, so I don’t see how it changes anything.

Ranked 3rd all time behind Giordano (949) and Iginla (1219).
Both those guys were captains. That's all I'm saying.

I think he'll be captain next season if he signs an extension.

Again, who is the younger core player you are cutting to make room for an aging Backlund?

I'm not suggesting Backlund would be a core player at age 35 but if he can be extended for a couple years on the cheap as a 3b-4a center he would make a great captain.

I don't see him doing that though. How much of a paycut are you asking him to take? Good chance this will be his final deal and he is still putting up decent numbers while playing his role very well. You have multiple other deals that have to get done as well. So if the Flames are offering him 2.5M/yr which is under half of what he makes now and he can probably get at minimum 4.5M/yr on the market why would he sign that? What happens if Pelletier pops, are you giving him up to keep Backlund? So let's say next year the name Backlund Captain and he gets a 2 year extension, that is Captain for 3 years and then you have to hand it off. Sutter has said he would like a younger core player to step up to be Captain, that doesn't fit Backlund. I know he is not having the best first year here but to me it makes all the sense in the world to give the C to Huberdeau. The players respect him, he is very well spoken, he is your big ticket guy, and he is extended for 8 more years. I have no doubt he will bounce back to being at minimum a ppg player. That would be my choice. I think Backlund is a great choice to continue to wear the A.

Unless he falls off a cliff. I would gladly sign him to a one year contract at 4.5 after his current contract. Could probably get cheaper but wouldn't be concerned.
Should have been made captain when Gio left. Too late now, gotta wait for a young guy

Yes. Because the whole reason people want him to be captain is because he scored that OT goal.
Nothing to do with his play all season, or his entire career as a Flame.

When was the last time Backlund rallied the team to win anything? He is part of the core that has won 2 playoff series in mote than a decade.
He is supposed to be a "defensive specialist" yet guys like Getzlaf, Mackinnon, McDavid ran circles around this team in the playoffs.
Decent player but absolutely overrated imo.

+18 on the season on this team with its inconsistencies is really impressive
That mangi, backs, coleman line is money. If they can even be called a third line, it might be the best in the league
