Yes but for one playoff , ROR is the better bet and cheaper

O'Reilly's cap hit is for $7.5 million. His actual number paid to him this season is $6 million with $5 million already paid as a bonus. This means $1 million in base salary for 82 games. His team (St. Louis) has already played 54 games or 66% of the season. That means that 34% of his base salary of $1 million still needs to be paid, or $340,000. The Leafs pay half ($170,000) and Minnesota pays half($170,000).

So, Minnesota pays out $170,000 in real money and $1,875,000 in a cap hit and gets a 4th round pick.
It's actually done by days of the season, which is 54 remaining out of ~188 (might be 184 depending if it started with the Euro games or not); rounding to 29% either way, so it's about $290k that's getting split up:

STL pays half = $145k
MIN and TOR each pay a quarter = $72.5k each

They're going for it at least? I'd rather Toronto be the ones doing this kind of thing than the Flames.

If Toronto goes far in the playoffs, I will cheer for Brodie/Gio for sure.

Related, have Gio & Brodie been a pairing yet for the Leafs? Feels like it would be an obvious fit but don't think they have been.

Meh, maybe it works out, but I'm getting shades of everyone who declared the Leafs winning the deadline when they picked up Phaneuf and Giguere. O'Reilly is not as declined as they were, but he's not the Ryan O'Reilly everyoen thinks of when they hear his name anymore, either.

Maybe it works out well. More likely it doesn't.

Well, I sure don’t wish the leafs any success at all.

This might be a crazy overpayment if leafs don’t at least get out of the first round. Still, it’s an educated guess so…

It’s getting near the end of the matthews era and nearing the start of the McDavid era.

You should give stand up comedy a try.

I keep seeing these "they won't get by Tampa/Boston" so what's the point? That's so silly. They're clearly in their contention window and have a really good team, if they aren't willing to push chips in and bolster depth right now they they may as well not even bother trying to win.

I wonder of O'Reilly will hit up a Tim Hortons when he arrives.

St. Louis is one of the few cities in the US that have Tim Hortons

Off topic, but nah, they're actually all over the place down there now.

Was just driving and the 32 Thoughts Podcast from Friday came on…

Interesting that Freedman actually spitballed this trade.

Paraphrasing, but he said ‘I wonder if a team like the Leafs would ask for 2 of O’Reilly, Barbashev, or Acciari’.

Curious if he new something was up.

I feel nothing for Toronto fans

But the least of which sympathy

IDGAFF. All but one leaf fan I've met has been a poop hurling dufus

I do like Steve Dangles kind of, but nah. They can wait another half century
