I was hoping this past summer that the Flames were going to start a rebuild and Dube would be the captain going forward.

Well your track record would suggest the opposite, he's staying.

Want to bet on it? Also except for Gaudreau my track record is pretty damn accurate. Loser donates $100 to CP.

Does betting on it change anything? Or are you just puffing your chest out after being challenged.

People on this site have said this his entire career, yet he has lasted longer than most that have ever worn the Flames jersey.
To me putting the C on him is a no brainer, I expected it when Gio left and certainly thought it was going to happen this off season after Johnny and Matthew planned their escape, especially after his performance in the playoffs.
Once again this year showing how important and impactful he is game in and game out, never taking a shift off.
I'm pretty damn sure if the players on the team were given the vote Backs would be wearing that C.

Backlund rules. I'd be very sad to see him in another jersey. Truly hope he's a Flame forever.

I know this is based on the idea that a rebuild started last year but in this scenario I’d want to be 100% sure that he isn’t implicated in any of the world junior scandals. Not suggesting he is implicated but I want clarity before I would even consider him.

He says he is staying in a rude context , I say he won't be.So let him put his money where his mouth is. Funny how you are ragging on me yet totally ignore the guy who was being a dick about it.

Jesus the Internet bet is so lame.
Anyhoo, Backlund loves Calgary and has put a lot of roots down here. I think from the player's point of view, he probably wants to stay.
And from the team point of view, he's a guy who elevates those he plays with, including young players. So whether you are re-building or not, there is a valuable role for him to play.
I would love to see him retire as a Flame.

So who are you cutting loose to keep a 3rd line soon to be 34 year old centre? You going to dump Lindholm? Hanifin? Mangiapane? Huberdeau and Kadri going nowhere. Even if you let Toffoli walk you still don't have the money with all the other contracts that have to get done. So what younger key piece are you cutting to keep an aging Michael Backlund? You think he is going to sign for peanuts with one contract left to go in his career because Flames fans are sentimental about it? It financially isn't going to work, you have to replace aging assets with younger cost control ones.

Doesn't this response kind of prove my point? Let the ego go, he wasn't being that rude.
And I hardly feel that this comment and my previous one is "ragging" on you. It's barely a conversation at this point.

Well he doesn't need a new deal until 2024/2025 I think? And by then I think the team could be very different.
And I also think he at that stage could be signed for a more reasonable cap hit to finish his career.

If he's open to taking a pay cut to stay a Flame that would be awesome. I know that reality might butt in and end up with Backs going elsewhere, but he's my second favourite Flame ever behind Iginla, so I'll dream of him being a career Flame up until it doesn't happen.

Backlund has an outside shot at finishing on top of the Flames all time games played list, assuming he sticks around.
It would be weird for a guy to have that record and not be our captain at some point. I say give it to him

Yeah, I imagine that even with all he brings a 35 year old Backlund is likely signing for the same or less than he earns now, and there’s quite a bit of turnover (and an increasingly cap) by that time.
Making any firm declarations about what’s happening just seems foolish and I honestly don’t know why fans do it, it’s not like there’s insider info there. I’d be a lot less surprised to see Backlund sign a retirement deal than I would to see him leave.

Well that seems like a contradiction considering I said I think he will leave in my opinion while the guy who's post you thanked said he was staying which is the firm declaration. So which is it Pepsi?

I thanked the one post because I agreed that your track record is poor and I thanked the other because I agreed with everything it said. I can explain every one of my “thanks” as they happen if that’s something you’re interested in.
Opinion or otherwise, coming down firm one way or another doesn’t make much sense to me. I have to assume that 99% of what we read here is opinion, so I don’t see how it changes anything.
