This team could be summed up as 'Wholly Uninspiring.'
I think you're misunderstanding what I'm saying. I'm saying it's not a lost season if there's still a good chance they're making the playoffs. They won't tank for better draft picks. They're not going to be sellers at the deadline. If they make the playoffs it's not a lost season. Just get in and give yourself a chance.

That does not mean I'm happy with the season up to this point. I agree with your last sentence.

Okay, fair enough.

The only reason I really consider the term 'Lost Season' is that, okay, if they squeak in they've got a chance at...something?

But this team has a rapidly deteriorating window of contention. Treliving gambled hard on Huberdeau, Weegar, Kadri and to a degree Markstrom. All of those players are 'Big Dollar, Long Term, Ageing' contracts.

We can afford to suck 4 years down the road, that pain was well advertised to be coming, but you've really gotta have something to show for it in the meantime.

If they suck now and they suck later and then they suck even more, then thats a lost gamble.

Yep, I agree with that. I still think this is a good team playing badly/inconsistently. You never know, if they actually figure things out late in the season or in the playoffs (if they make it) they might win a game or four. So many underachieving players this year, if they actually get their heads screwed on straight I still think they could make some noise. Maybe too optimistic, but I like a lot of pieces on this team.

Rapidly deteriorating? Like they're aging faster than other NHL players? Just day by day isn't it?

if other contending teams have younger cores, then yes the Flames will age faster than them. there's a huge difference between having your core be around 30 years old in the year 2026, versus ours which will be 33-35.

So young players are aging slower than older players?!

Yikes! This is mind blowing.

Tongue in cheek for sure, but then so was my original response. It sounded like the Flames were on a different clock!

I think the main point is that age curves aren't linear. Players tend to decline pretty quickly in their 30s.

For every player that plays well into his mid-30's there's hundreds of players that fall off the map once they get into their 30's and it doesn't always get noticed as a lot of them are depth players that are easily forgotten. Frolik for example was a solid middle 6 player and yet his career was essentially over at 30.
