I'm curious what people think on this topic. What happens to us when we die? Do we have a soul? If so, what happens to it? Or are we just worm food after we take our last breath? I don't want this to turn into some battle over theology or religious doctrine, I'm curious what people believe happens to us when we die and whether we continue to exist in some other form or just cease to exist. Near Death Experience (NDE) has supposedly given some people insight into the afterlife, but I personally don't think that is the case, so I would like to hear other thoughts and ideas on the subject.
This is a fantastic question and a very interesting topic of conversation, especially as the world begins to understand quantum physics and quantum mechanics much better.
The universe is made up of vibrational energy. Because of that, I believe we were all, at the root of our existence, part of that same vibrational energy that exists throughout the universe. Consciousness, in my opinion, is part of a world of science. We don't understand the deep frameworks yet about entanglement theory, but I think consciousness has a role to play and a much deeper story than our simple corporeal bodies.
Journey of Souls is also a fun read. It's a book about 70 random people who were taken into hypnotic regression, and the author/ researcher identifies patterns that these people speak about regarding what happens in the life between lives. They thrust of it is that we keep reincarnating on this Earth until we've reached a certain level of enlightenment. That's not entirely different from Buddhist principles and other non-denominational religions.
I think there's something there, our vibrational energy was there when we were formed as a single cell, and leaves as our body decomposes back into the same matter it came from.
On the other hand, this could all be a big simulation, and we wake up and take the helmet off. Rick and Morty have an episode where Morty plays a video game in arcade, lives a full human life, then takes off the helmet. Stunned. And Rick doesn't give a crap and just wants to move on to the next arcade machine. I always thought that was poignant.
Also for a fun quick watch, go to YouTube and watch " the egg story". That one stuck with me as well.

I think at our core, we are all spiritual creatures who are all here on a spiritual journey. I think of myself as a supernatural agnostic, I don't know what's going on, but I'm pretty sure that it's crazier and more complex than anything we could ever conceive of. I think we're all looking for the spiritual growth that only be found by overcoming hardships in life. Ultimately, we should be exploring our own spiritual Journeys with all the Vigor we can muster, and respect that everyone else is on a similar Journey. Everything you do at every phase of your life is equally important.
I tried the whole atheist thing, but it was just so uninspiring and depressing. Your Consciousness is driving around a magical meat skeleton in a universe of infinite wonder and mystery, and the conclusion you come to is that everything is arbitrary and nothing matters. How lame is that? My life has certainly been a lot more interesting, joyful and fulfilling with my current outlook.

I don’t think there’s life after death, but I think we could be stuck in our own mind at the very last moment of life, which would only be an instant in real time, but in your mind could last eternity. So if you had a happy mind while on earth, you can be in a good space. If you had a troubled mind on earth, you may not want to be locked in there.

I’m of the mindset with Coach. Current NDEs are likely the mind in a semi conscious dream like state. Since time has no consistency in dreams could something like that occur just before death?
I do like the concept of the afterlife there just isn’t evidence of something external.
I like Matata’s concept but think it’s internal mystery that’s a fragment of evolution and consciousness that drives what is expressed as spirituality. That the external spiritual world is unlikely to exist doesn’t make the human need for spiritually any less real.

There is no such thing. Every organism on this planet has a purpose.
Worm food, but at least my molecules will live on when they are recycled into the food chain and enter other beings. My conscious self is gone forever, but the things that made me live in eternity.
It's a simple principle of science: Matter and energy are neither created nor destroyed*, they only change forms.
(*exceptions made for anti-matter annihilation of matter)

Every organism has a function in an ecosystem where they outcompete the alternatives for the resources they need to procreate. That should not be confused with purpose which is an anthropomorphism of an organism.

I believe the afterlife and reincarnation doesn't exist.
we're dead and we're just worm food. no higher plane of existence, no souls moving on somewhere else. nothing.

In one of the religious studies courses I took in university I did a paper on NDEs. I didn't delve into the religious side of them because, well, I've yet to see, hear or read a single thing that indicates religion is anything other than preposterous. So I did all my research at the medical library.
NDEs seemed to be fairly well understood, if I recall correctly. Basically, it's your brain being flooded with some chemical (they even have the name...I could look it up in my old work, but as if I'll bother). Anyway, you'll have guys saying they floated above their own body and up into the space above the surgical table and through the ceiling tiles, etc. They've actually put targets and stuff inside the ceilings to test this. Want to take a guess at how many patients experiencing NDEs actually were floating above their bodies and between the ceiling tiles and the floors above in such a way that they could identify these items in the space lol? Yeah, like zero (obviously).
Weird, eh? Pump a guy full of some of the most powerful drugs we have and they trip balls. Who would have thought?
There has been a ton of studies on NDEs. Just chemicals in your brains, guys.
The "simulation" theory drives me nuts. Like if you want to smoke a bowl and pontificate the "what ifs, man" then go for it. But if you actually believe it, you're basically a flat earther to me.
The only thing that suggests there would be an afterlife stems from all of us being steeped - against our will - in ancient religious thought. Nothing else points to an afterlife and, frankly, the whole notion is ridiculous. Of course there isn't. Snap the fata out of it. It's 2023.

There's no evidence so while it would be nice to be pleasantly surprised it seems to be better to live life as if this time is the only time you get.
Would it even be a pleasant surprise, though? I think being trapped in my own brain and my own thoughts for eternity would be torture and I'm living a reasonably good life over here. I truly don't see the appeal of immortality. Sounds awful.
