Markstrom was never really a good goalie. There's a reason Vancouver didn't want him and went with Demko. Don't forget the Oilers were in on him too and we all know how well they judge goaltending. The dude had a career year just like every Flame last season. It was literally a season where everything went right. Until it didn't. Because of him. He got the media hype because he was the best available goaltender on the market and cashed in. Now the Flames are stuck with him.

Even the first goal against on the breakaway. Make the save when your team needs it. It's all about the timing.
It wasn’t good. The whole team, including Markstrom of course, let Ottawa just roll over them in those two minutes. The whole team, including Markstrom, abandoned what they had done for the first 58.

This loss is inexcusable. This team has no heart. No pride. No balls.

What the ####. Embarrassing. Just embarrassing.

You can't win in this league with .892 save percentage - you just can't.

Markstrom now ranks (of 49 goalies with 1000 or more minutes) :

Save Percentage: .892 - 40th
GSAA: -12.90 - 41st

And my favourite stat - when the game is within 1 goal (29 qualified goalies):

Save Percentage: .879 - 28th (second last)
GSAA: -17.04 - 28th (second last)

The team defense could be better but tonight 2 of those final 3 goals are questionable (2nd and 4th) and you just can't count on him at all right now to make a big save.

There should be no more Markstrom starts for the rest of February.

Can people honestly look at the big picture with this team and objectively say they deserve to be in the playoffs?

There is a confidence issue and a work ethic issue. You have to keep skating and winning puck battles until the game is over. Like Estrada said they decided they’d won and basically stopped digging and the Sens took advantage.

Might as well trade Markstrom for some other overpaid, underperforming player just to get him off this team.

What’s James Neal up to these days?

I thought to myself late in the 3rd

"Well I'm glad this one was worth sitting through, since they showed up and gave us another convincing win"

Jesus, you can never feel safe with this bunch, can you.

I'll try not watching .. maybe they get on a streak

I would give him the Arizona game to let Vladar rest in a heavy stretch

That game should be the nail in Sutter's coffin. Starting Markstrom was absolutely stupid, and what a surprise he completely collapses and we lose a game we should have won.

No other coach in the NHL would be force feeding these starts to Markstrom. It's completely insane.

Can't wait for Sutter and his crap style of hockey to be gone.

Is that why they offered him a new contract? Because they didn’t want him?

Saying “he was never really a good goalie” is absolutely ridiculous.

Crap on him for this season.

But he’s had the resume of a decent starting goalie.

Markstrom can sit for a while now. I thought he was on the right path when it was 3-1. Then he showed us and the team shows they are fragile losers.

Or ever. Send a message that if you continue to suck for almost a year you are gone.

Trade him at the deadline.

Sell everything.

Yes, when you factor in salary. Nobody thought or ranked any of those goalies in the top 10 or 15 in the league. We had a glaring hole in net and everybody knew it. Their meltdowns feel very different than what we are witnessing here. Markstrom is the 7th highest paid NHL goalie and you could make a pretty good argument he should be the backup.

I think he's cooked. Maybe his career could be revitalized on an eastern conference team but he looks like a veteran goaltender that's mentally shot. The number one priority of the Flames GM this summer has to be getting rid of Markstrom. They can't bring him back after this season. It's bad for both parties.
