Yup.
I was called crazy at the time in the offseason when a re-build was still maybe an option (to all but our ownership group) but had you shopped Lindholm @ 2 x $2.425M, and Hanifin @ 2x $2.5M then I'm not sure what the return would have been.
Honestly I think you might even have gotten more than two 1sts and a prospect.
A PPG top line, Selke nominated center for $2.425M would probably have been the craziest trade market in recent memory. You would have had 20 teams interested and bidding, which is rare in the NHL today.
Would be the same thing with Chychrun at $2.3M - $3M for 2+ years.

I don't see Chychrun re-signing with the Flames, so no thanks to overpaying for him as a rental.

He has 2 more years after this one at a reasonable $4.6M - which is why he's probably going to be so coveted.

You can’t keep these good players around forever if you plan on getting new good players.

I just can't believe ppl want to trade assets this year. The team hasn't come together. Best to do nothing (possibly sell a player maybe) and try and sort things out for next year.

My thought is we trade Hanifin with a less valuable asset for Chychrun and buy that extra year for the Sutter window with a slightly more proven top d-man

The Sutter Window??? Do you want this nightmare to continue?!?!?! Right now, Chychrun reminds me too much of OEL when he was with the coyotes.

How exactly do you mean?
In his early-to-mid 20s, OEL was a force to be reckoned with. He dramatically slowed down in the late 2010s and has continued to drop off since being traded to VAN.
But there was an extended period there wherein OEL was one of the top defenders in the game at both ends of the ice.

I just mean that he plays defense on the coyotes, everyone wants him, good contract, and all that jazz. Then he'll sign his next contract, where he'll wanna get PAID, and his play will dropl off dramatically. I'm not saying this will happen for sure but I get a feeling from this situation.

Why would the Coyotes have any interest in one year of Hanifin?
The are rumoured to want Clarke from LA.

Ah I see what you mean. Yeah I think that's certainly possible — and part of the reason why AZ might want to move him.

Wasn’t one of the reasons chychrun wants out is because he is sick of losing and hoping to be in a bigger market? Can’t imagine he would be happy going to Columbus

Yes, he wants to go to a contender.
Would be pretty funny though to see him get traded to a team with a worse record. I imagine AZ doesn’t care though, they want the best return. Wouldn’t make sense for Columbus to mortgage some future for a guy that would not only hinder their Bedard ticket but also not help them be contenders by the time his contract expires.

Why do we have any interest in trading Hanifin for anything that isn’t picks and prospects? He’s one of their best players, and this team isn’t a lateral move of Hanifin to Chychrun away from being good.
Contenders would pay through the nose for Hanifin, especially if retention is on the table.

we're not rebuilding. That ship sailed once we traded for Huberdeau+Weegar and re-signed Sutter. The only way I could see us flip Hanifin for futures only is if Sutter is gone and the 2024 UFAs force their hands, but even then I doubt it.
