Given how deep chinas tentacles are within all of Canadas business/govt/ and social institutions I wonder why they bother with this kind of risky surveillance.

Yes, I mean it would be easy enough to just strap anything they want into a private jet and fly anywhere they want within the US, maybe load up a Winnebago as well, what ever the idea for these things intelligence gathering doesnt seem to be its real mission

Interesting quote in an interview with our defense minister that this object was at 40,000 feet, well within the altitude capabilities of the Hornet. Yet we couldn't respond, even with Jets at Cold Lake,

It makes me wonder if like our MBT's and other equipment how functional our airforce response is.

Can we just turn things over to the dolphins and the cephalopods now? Apes aren't proving the best at this. At the very least maybe we could put the bonobos in charge for a while instead of us.

One only has to look at a map to see where Cold Lake and Elmendorf are in relation to Yukon to understand why our F18s couldn’t get there first. Or do we stage some out of Inuvik?

Not to mention the speed difference between the CF-18 and the F-22. Don't know why folks are trying to play this up as some kind of issue with Canada (in the media and the official opposition), NORAD worked exactly as it should have.

Another one downed over Lake Huron by the sounds of things.

I'm starting to think some Russian teenagers got ahold of a few canisters of helium and are having a lark.

Yeah, I think there is something else going on here than China for sure. They were pretty quick to identify the first one as a Chinese surveillance balloon. The fact these ones are more of a mystery still, or at least nothing has been made public, makes me think they are unrelated.

I wonder if the Chinese balloon just caused heightened awareness and we are finding things now that we are actually looking.

We've staged some out of Inuvik at times before but didn't have any at this time.

In this instance they got to Yellowknife before turning around and just going back

I really think the title of this thread needs to be edited to include the word “Ongoing”
