Default [Barn Burner] Boomer: "You were wrong"

The Barn Burner crew was on absolute fire today. It is the most open, honest discussion/critique from any "insiders" I've probably ever heard put out there regarding the Flames organization.

Warrener talks about bravery when it comes to GMs - he notes Yzerman trading St. Louis. You be honest with yourself and what you are, and you sell what you can.

Boomer lays out that yeah the Flames tried to stay in it and compete but that they were wrong.

This episode is definitely worth a listen/watch.

Barn Burner is the best thing to happen to Flames coverage in the modern era.

"these guys agree with me so they are obviously right and telling it like it is"

I'm not hearing a lot of ideas other than everything is terrible...which is pretty much all Rhett ever says

what is his plan exactly? Rhett is the guy that will say I told you so if they don't win the cup...in a 32 team league

Flames shouldn't be spending major assets to add but right now they also shouldn't panic and do something stupid. They are tied for a playoff spot with a team that has been even worse of late.

Rhett? He doesn't really lay one out. He does lay out that the organization hasn't built anything of quality which is why they never have any real level of success. He does note a GM being brave enough to make hard decisions - something Treliving/the Flames failed to do.

Boomer does - says sell what you can. Admit that you were wrong with what you did last summer, and start off in a new direction.

Yeah, I agree with both Rhett and Boomer. The foundation this team is built on isn't a good one. It's loaded with expensive middle tier talent and no game breakers. It's just not a formula for success. It was a valiant attempt by Treliving last summer, but it was a misguided one. Conroy even spoke to the fact that it was a rebuild if Florida didn't put up the offer they did. Acknowledge that you made the wrong decision in that position, and start a new journey. Don't waste any more time on this team as it is structured.

Lindholm would return a FORTUNE if they traded him now.

Selke-finalist nearly PPG centre who plays in all situations, signed for 1 more year at <$5M.

It doesn’t matter if they make the playoffs this year - they don’t have the goaltending to anything but get nuked in round one.

Sell sell sell.

The opinions shared this morning are pretty prevalent. The opinions that this isn't as bad as it looks are in the minority.

It's worth a listen even if you form part of the latter.

IDK Rhett saying how brave Yzerman was for trading St. Louis is why its hard to take him seriously

St. Louis was 38 and demanded a trade

so brave

He is like a fan ranting and raving that doesn't really follow the game/team. If he actually gave some reasonable ideas of what he would do it would hold more weight.

Steinberg is still my favorite he will criticize but is also realistic about things and provide reasonable examples of what he would do, agree or not.

I don't foresee anything of significance happening until Treliving gets a new contract, or someone new is brought in.

Team lost two star players, 100 pts guys

For team to succeed they banked on Huberdeau to produce at least as much as Gaudreau did last year

He is producing half and looks totally disinterested and lost.

I agree with his assessment of the state of the team, but I don't think the Flames can realistically rebuild at this point now. The opportunity to rebuild was gift wrapped after Gaudreau left and Tkachuk was traded. The pieces we signed are locked in now and the team is on rails for the next years. There is no egress from this path. Going all-in means you are all-in, and some mistakes just can't be undone.

Imagine if the Flames were going into the 2023 draft with multiple first, and one that would have easily been a top 5 or 10. Even if the team was losing, there would at least be a lot of hype for the future. As it is right now, there is only anxiety.

this isn't true...they don't need 115 points out of Huberdeau. They would be succeeding right now with a few more wins.

10 more points from Huberdeau
average Markstom
Mangiapane not taking the first two months off

ect.

I love this show and I love Flames Talk

There’s a massive juxtaposition between the two in terms of how critical they are willing to be of the org so it’s a nice balance

Treliving is off to Toronto in April and this will be Darryl’s club to work with after that.

He was damned if he didn’t sign the FLA guys and damned if he did.

Darryl is the one who needed to modify his style to incorporate the new additions and it really seems like he’s refused to. Not saying that Huberdeau and Weegar bare no responsibility, as they both have massively underperformed.

Hindsight is 20/20. Had we just rebuilt we may have been talking Bedard this year instead of a 13/14/15 overall pick.

Classic Flames

Correct he’s forcing things if anything but I don’t get James Neal vibes out of him

I see effort level it’s just not leading to much of anything. Really rough last night

Man, just imagine if Tre does in fact go and Darryl gets a puppet GM. That Duha fantasy trade with Montreal could actually happen.
