Rangers originally acquired Blais from St. Louis in the Buchnevich trade. $1.525 cap hit on Blais then UFA after this season.

Just need some other teams to trade for Meier and Kane

But I want to reiterate that I still don't see the appeal of new York whatsoever. Would be one of the last places I would go to live. Players have interesting tastes for sure.

NYC is awesome. If you have money for a nice place.

Kane to NYR was never realistic. The cap space just didn't work.

so reports so far
Tarasenko (salary retained)
for
Blais
2023 1st round pick
(maybe another pick)
prospect
Rangers also have a conditional 2023 Dallas 1st round pick so could see some complicated trade conditions.

That seems high. I guess the retention cost them.

That might end up being a win for both teams.

So Blais and a first for Tarasenko retained and a 4th for Mikkola. Skinner is just a contract.
Seems like not that much really, depending on how Blais is really valued.

That is quite a massive return for a UFA that wasn't protected in the expansion draft
2023 firsts are super valuable

The real contenders are going to need to make space for help.
I hope Flames can somehow work this to their advantage. Not that they have much room to play with.

Yeah I really didn’t expect to see Tarasenko return a ‘23 1st. ‘24 1st? Sure, no problem - but a 2023 1st? Now the first two trades in trade season have both involved (conditional) ‘23 1st rounders. That’s a surprise to me.

I’d thought STL would’ve wanted one of Kakko or Lafreniere to go along with Thomas and Kyrou over longer term prospects/ picks. Maybe they weren’t on the table for Tarasenko

This opinion is garbage. The Rangers have been constructed pretty honestly. Yes, they signed some big free agents, but it's not the sole reason why they're good. They've drafted some key players, and used other assets to trade for some key players. There's only a handful of free agents that have any significant impact on the team.
Drafted
Shesterkin
Lafreniere
Kakko
Kreider
Chytil
Kravtsov
Miller
Schneider
Trade
Zibanejad
Trouba
Lindgren
Goodrow
Tarasenko
Gauthier
Hajek
Free agent signing:
Panarin
Trocheck
Vesey (retread, but had his ELC with the Rangers and was developed by them)
Harpur
Halak
*Fox (He was actually traded to the Rangers. I'm only throwing this in there because it was known that he would test free agency and sign with the Rangers if possible)
There's no reason to talk like this about the Rangers at all. It's an old narrative that doesn't apply anymore in a salary cap league where lots of factors go into where players decide to sign.

I predict Tarasenko will either work out very well or very poorly in New York. No in-between.

I still that P. Kane is the better(and cheaper) fit on the Flames.

Kane won't leave Chicago now imo.
