I thought we left that #### behind with Mike Smith
Why do we have another big goalie doing this now
You know, the whole being extra dramatic/out of position to make an otherwise standard save look more difficult than it had to be, only to give up a juicy rebound that you can't stop because you took yourself out with the cartwheel/pad stack

I said it last night but in OT he should be vacuuming up those shots. But he gave up rebounds and took himself out from the initial saves, twice in a row. The second time the rags made no mistake

I feel like I watched a different game.
If your expectation of him is to 'swallow' a massive save like he made before the OT goal then there's literally nothing he could do to satisfy you.

Markstom made a miraculous save in OT that should have led to a odd man rush the other way but Zadorov skated past the net...they teach dmen in peewee to stop at the net to clear players and get rebounds
It was a point blank chance, blaming him for a rebound and being out of position after that is ridiculous bias

Maybe I'm being too hard on him. But I don't see a calm goalie in good position that is handling rebounds well. I see a guy trying hard, but who is the polar opposite of that. It's great that he makes miraculous saves, but if he's on his game like last season I doubt many of those saves have to look miraculous.
Good goalies make their lives easier by not being caught deep, out of position, and finding ways to be more of a cushion than a pong paddle when it comes to shots directed their way.
Maybe the performance isn't worthy of heavy critique, necessarily, but for a goalie paid $6M to execute at a certain level, it didn't earn the kind of defense it is getting from some either.
The team can be better in front. So can Markstrom.

It was brutal and he loses his net easily. You can tell he’s trying extremely hard but it’s working against him because he’s losing his net far too often.

This describes Carey Price before his Cup run. He figured it out, so will Marky.

I don’t think he lost his net last night though, and he was way out on the winning goal because he had to be. The Flames sucked big time in OT.

yeah are we arguing on the season or are we talking about last night
I spent 9 days saying he was the main reason the team isn't in a better spot but he was good last night. It was a pretty wide open game as were most of the games yesterday. The OT save was spectacular, ridiculous to expect him to get the rebound or do anything different there. That is a point blank look with passing options.

For me, the rebound control issue was things I saw earlier in the game. There were a number of pucks that hit him right in the chest and the just bobbled back into the slot. Those are the ones he definitely needs to swallow up.
I don't want to pile on the guy, I choose to believe he'll turn it around. But it's really hard to ignore the fact that he's not playing well right now. Even I can't deny it any more

Biggest issue I have with Markstrom. The guy is 6'6 but plays like he's 6'. Its like he doesn't understand his size is his greatest strength and not his athleticism. Either that or he his mental game is so weak, he can't maintain any type of composure in net, so he gets caught flailing/out of control, which lead to bad rebounds and/or over playing shooters that cause him to lose his net.

The advanced stats suggest he gave up about 1.5 goals more than he should have.

Markstrom can make big saves
Question is can he make the saves when they need them
This year, the answer is definitely no

The only goal I didn't like was the two on one - I think he guessed at it. And even there is was, you know, a two on one.
The breakaway I thought was a really deceptive shot. That kid is a player.

I wasn’t thinking about the winning goal because he had no chance on that sequence. There were 2 or 3 times during the game that he seemed to lose his net from overplaying a shot. It didn’t cost us last night but he still doesn’t look like the Markstrom he can be.

I get that, but goalies are expected to make great saves all the time.

And he did. I think he saved them a point. But those saves seem to be discounted.
Goalies also aren't expected to save every great opportunity. Markstrom hasn't been as good as last year. But last game was not on him.

I'm still stuck on the point that the advanced stats suggested he should have given up about 3.5 goals, based on an average goalie.
They would say he cost them a point.
Now it's one game, the fact remains, Marky has been quite poor this year, at least by his standards.
All in all, I'd say he's been an average goalie this year. Which is not good enough.
