Yeah, it is about time. I like the new slogan and we can definitely make some nicer signs coming into town anyway. Not just the basic metal version.

Meh. Having Howdy and Heidi on the welcome signs doesn't bother me. As for the new sign, I'm not a big fan of cowboy hats, but Howdy and Heidi had them, so whatever.
...As long as they don't have a six-shooter, a saloon, and tumbleweeds!

Actually, it's just Howdy on the sign.
Good thing an end is being put to this gross display of unmistakable misogyny!

I think Heidi is on a different sign. East side maybe?

But they will soon be replaced by a more contemporary welcome, modelled along the lines of a monument on the Trans-Canada Highway on the eastern outskirts, said John Hubble, one of the city's general managers.
From CBC.ca
On 960 this afternoon that "monument" was referred to as a "formation of concrete blocks" or something like that, and this Hubble character didn't even know who put it there. Does anyone know what he's talking about?
And I really hate "The Heart of the New West" slogan.

Hahaha! Heidi is actually in the picture. Way off in the background on the 'Bienvenue a Calgary'. I don't know why I find that so funny but I do.

Beats out "We're Edmonton. We're not that bad. No, really. We've got a FCUK store an' everything!"™

I always thought they were lame mascots anyhow. But then again, when has there been an Olympic Games mascot that wasn't lame? Have you seen the new Chinese mascots?

I went on a ski trip a long time ago probably a year or so after the Olympics. We could only afford 1/2 bus, the other half was occupied by heidi and howdy mascots(well, actually the people). I think our drunkeness scared some of them.

Personally, I like the 'Heart of the New West' slogan, and I think the sign leading into Calgary from the East is great. No idea why they never put signs like that up on the other three primary entrances to the city.

I remember the public furor in the post-Olympic days when a local cartoonist depicted Heidi and Howdy as bearskin rugs. Two inane smiling cartoon faces on the floor in front of a roaring fire. Now THAT was funny!

I'd like a small salute to the olympics on our signs still. Maybe Heidi and Howdy are outdated, but I think some olympic rings could still rock the casbah. We're one of less than 50 cities who can legitimately claim to being an olympic city...let's take advantage of it.

It would be sweet if our "Welcome to Calgary" signs weren't practically in the inner city. You've already been in Calgary for a while by the time you see the ones on the West end.

Ya I noticed that too...kinda weird but maybe in 88 when those signs were probably put in that was the country...

Yeah, we can be like Edmonton and hold onto glory that is 20 years old.
