Looking at footage from Turkey makes me so grateful to live in Calgary. As much as I bitch about the weather, we really do live in one of the safest places on Earth. No war, low crime, no major natural disasters other than some flooding and hail, plentiful water and food supply. I'm thankful I lucked out on the geographic lottery

I am not sure how this compares to other quakes, so without reference, the affected area strikes me as pretty massive.

Think a lot of this is just being in a rich country. California has earthquakes around this level that don't collapse entire cities. Cold snaps is a killer in countries without the wealth/resources to heat every where.

EDIT: this is a fair bit stronger than any earthquake California has had recently.. so that was incorrect.

Yea, California hasn't had an earthquake that strong for over 100 years. Also I'm quite glad we don't have to deal with the drought situation that's been hitting the western US for the last decade

Some sources are confusingly combining both Turkey's and Syria's death numbers.

But after reading a bit more info this afternoon, it's sad to say that it's possible the 5000 confirmed dead number could easily be a single country's confirmation soon. It's so jarringly shocking before the sad can even begin to sink in.

I think some of the information said there were about 6500+ buildings in the different regions of Turkey alone that have collapsed? To have around 1 person per building would be nothing short of a miracle.

Japan might be a good example. They seem to have a lot of large quakes but have built to sustain most of them.

I honestly wonder how a 7.8 earthquake would impact the Vancouver area. I could see the same kind of destruction despite being a wealthier region than southern Turkey. I think once a quake is that bad, there isn't a lot you can do.

Coincidentally, I am in an emergency response exercise this weak in the LML with the scenario being a 6.8 quake hitting just off the coast. It is expected that such a quake would cause really significant damage, and isn't 7.8 like 10x stronger or something like that?

I try to keep my tinfoil hidden most of the time, but has anyone seen this fellow on twitter who was using solar system geometry to try and corroborate quakes, and called this exact quake 3 days ago? it's kind of eerie. he's being retweeted by everyone and their uncle right now, and it's probably just some wild coincidence, but I'm a bit rustled by it.

Most sources are saying that only 3500 are confirmed dead, but the WHO is also stating that there could be 8 times as many deaths as what's been confirmed:

Thankfully you don't see anyone die in the video but there's one on tik tok of a bunch of people running away as one building starts making large noises. Then suddenly a building on the next block that they're all running to collapses.

Just crazy stuff to be stuck in.
