Personally I'll never forgive Treliving giving Tkachuk a walk away contract.
Ottawa played hardball with Brady and has him thru his prime years.

It was the same season where other top RFA’s (namely Matthews) did the same thing. It was the market standard that season.

Flames paid a 1st round pick to dump 1 season of Monahan to sign Kadri.
Flames (likely) could have paid a 1st round pick to dump 1 season of Frolik to sign Tkachuk for 8 years (he was open to the long term at the time).
Treliving has made plenty of mistakes here (and plenty of good moves). Signing Tkachuk to that contract was one of his biggest mistakes. The end result may also be that we end up with one of the worst contracts in NHL history as well (Huberdeau’s 8 X $10.5M). We would be significantly better off had we offered Tkachuk an 8 year deal at $9.5M - $10.5M on his 2nd contract than where we have ended up now.
It’s okay to spend big dollars on top, young players. It’s much more advisable than spending those dollars on older players.
The Oilers did it with Draisaitl, and it was a brilliant decision. We did what we did with Tkachuk, and it was a stupid decision.

Tkachuk becoming a legit top tiered superstar is as shocking as Huberdeau’s season so far
Most people didn’t predict it this early.

Or you didn't because you're an Oilers fan?

I miss watching the two of them, maybe because while they were here, they were still relatively young and had the promise of potential. But I also didn’t really feel the team was built to be a winner either so there’s that.
|
If the team is winning we wouldn’t miss them. But they are mediocre and boring as hell. If you are losing, may as well be entertained. There are only few players in the league that are more entertaining than Johnny. Tkachuk was not as much but apparently he is now

And here I thought Treliving was a sharper GM than Kyle Dumas.
Oh wait, Dumas is getting 5 years out of Matthews

And he wants 15M on his next deal and hasn't won a round

come on now
Also, I highly doubt Tkachuk nor the Flames would be tearing it up right now with Tkachuk in and Kadri, Huberdeau, Weegar out...they would most likely be far worse than they currently are. Like who would Tkachuk even be playing with? Lindholm/Mangiapane I guess...the D and other lines would be pretty poor

But if that was the same goaltending effort put forward towards the whole shootout, than I’m really glad I didn’t watch.

My wife immediately looked at me like “wtf was that? He let her score?”
I said that it’s sort of all star shootout etiquette that the goalies don’t make a second effort on a nice move. And that nobody wants to see the goalie make the stop on a move in that style of event. But, it’s really unfortunate that’s the case. Because the resulting highlight doesn’t replay well.

He is earning his 5.9 contract this year...I think he will be back to PPG or so next season. Far from the worst contract in the league.
Christ an .896 goaltender makes 10M

It was a joke, good for Tkachuk, Panthers fans, and Florida as the host city.
I personally didn’t watch nor follow any of the all-star events this year, glad Kadri represented us well but the interest just wasn’t there for me this year.

Kadri was signed with the Gaudreau money.
I would take Tkachuk/Kadri over Huberdeau/Weegar any day, twice on Sundays

MATH my man...Kadri was not signed with the Gaudreau money, that is why they had to move Monahan to sign Kadri
Kadri 7M and say Tkachuk at 10 and Monahan not moved is 23M
the 1st from the Tkachuk trade was used to clear Monahan's cap
Huberdeau/Weegar are combined like 10M this season and the Flames are at the cap after dumping Monahan. There is no way they could have fit Kadri/Tkachuk/Monahan, the math doesn't work.
And if Gaudreau and Tkachuk both stayed they would have had to gut the team elsewhere too

Tkachuk wasn't getting 8X10 off his ELC, more likely $8.5, and Monahan's contract had to go regardless whether it was Gaudreau or a replacement top forward it had to go.

Well GL with that, it took a 1st to move it so saying it had to go, I guess the Flames could have used their own first (that would have gone over well)
Math still isn't even close anyway, Kadri would not be here...the Flames didn't have 15.5M in cap to spare
I would have kept Tkachuk too if he actually wanted to stay but when you actually look at the cap and the roster its not as rosy as it seems. I don't think its fair to say he would the same totals here and the roster wouldn't look so hot either right now when you factor everything in
