OMG, what I'm about to say is so gross...maybe everyone knows this, but I just read about it.
I was at somebody's house a couple days ago and it stunk like their dog. I was wondering how they couldn't notice. Now, to be clear, not everyone who owns a dog has a stinky house, but many do. Anyway, apparently people go noseblind to the stench, which I guess I knew because we're all noseblind to the smell of our own house. The big revelation is what causes a house to smell like a dog. So dogs have glands in their anus that produce a putrid (to me) smell. When they wag their tail, they're fanning that fataing smell around so it wafts all over the place. And people choose to live in that smell. Wtf!
Anyway, please feel free to share your stories and observations about dog nutters' obsession with these foul creatures.
Also, I get irrationally angry when people call them doggos. I can't even with that word.
I'm going to find your mother and slap her in the face.
Because I kept getting duds, that's why. I'm unlucky when it comes to pets.
The biggest thing I realized after actually getting a dog was that a dog's behaviour is almost 100% a function of their owner. I truly believe there's no bad dogs, just bad owners, and unfortunately, bad owners seem to be a majority. Basically every single "annoying" behavioural thing that has been brought up in this thread happens because the owner has knowingly or unknowingly fostered that behaviour in the dog. Take dogs greeting too excitedly and jumping - that's a behaviour that has been reinforced because the dog had done it in the past, received pets (positive reinforcement), and therefore thinks "hey, if I do this, I get pets and people like me", and is therefore going to continue repeating that behaviour.
So how your dog acts is purely a reflection on you, and if you kept getting duds, that's because you're a dud that has no idea how to properly interact with the dog. Please for the love of god don't do it a fourth time because you are the problem, not the dog.

I don't agree. Just as there are people who are a-holes, I'm pretty sure there are dogs who are a-holes too. They're not just some monotonous hive mind. They have individual personalities. We just forgive them cuz they're cute.

Why are those people a-holes? Were they born that way, or is much of it a product of their environment and how they were raised? Humans are also much much more complicated than dogs.
I didn't say dogs don't have individual personalities or don't differ at all. But in my opinion, it's on the owner to understand those things and figure out how to best connect with that dog. As has been said many times in this thread, you can't get a border collie and expect them to be a docile dog that wants to sleep all day. A dog owner needs to understand what fulfills their dog if they want to be successful as a dog owner. For some dogs, that's just a walk a couple of times a day or playing some light games. For other dogs, they need intense mental and physical stimulation several times a week. Again, that's on the owner to figure out, not on the dog, and it seems that many owners just want to be lazy and blame the dog for not being good, when they don't want to put in the effort to make sure that dog is content.
Train a dog from start to finish and maintain it and I think you'd see what I mean. My dog is night and day from when adopted to now, it's actually pretty crazy to see the transformation when you start to understand how they think, how to properly respond to their behaviour, and be very consistent with your expectations of their behaviour. You also start to notice other people with their dogs and how much their actions actually reinforce bad behaviours. It's 100% an owner issue.

Sure, but some people are just inherently bad people, regardless of environment, same with some dogs. You can't just say a dog's personality is always 100% from the environment they're brought up in. You can give the dog the best training, some will still just be crappy dogs. I mean, unless they're robots.

I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree. Now that I know what to watch for, I have honestly not seen one dog that’s “crappy” with an owner that seems to know what they’re doing and actively working to train out those behaviours.

But he didn’t say anything absurd. Dogs are instinctual animals. This means they’re not typically born “bad“. The dude clearly understands canine behavior, you and Pepsi have no clue of what you’re talking about. You at least have your typical weird take on things, which is usually pretty funny, Pepsi is just an ####### as usual. That being said, it is a pretty funny thread all in all.

That must be it lol. Nature and nurture doesn’t apply to dogs, or any other animal that’s not human really. I thought that would be obvious to the intellectual A-Team such as yourself. Dogs don’t have human traits, which means they’re not inherently mean or have daddy issues or have drug dependency problems. I mean there’s dogs that aren’t very nice, but to my original point, that’s usually a failure on humans and not on them.
